Is your MIL on? Any codes for the VSS?

The mil blinks a few times after starting the engine but does not stay on.

I found the VSS and took it out, sprayed some brake cleaner on the electrical contacts and reinstalled it.

Son says the speedometer works once in awhile but most of the time it remains at zero.

the speedometer was working once in a awhile. The mil was not on. any codes were cleared when i disconnected the battery. All the other gauges work fine.

I replaced the VSS and the speedometer still down not work. Looks like i wasted $75.

Is there a separate fuse for the speedometer that I should have checked?

Do I need to replace the entire instrument cluster or just part of it?

or should I be checking something else?

Did you run the self diagnostic test for the cluster?

I checked the fuses. They were ok.

I ran the test twice. Both times the tach, temp and fuel gauge moved steadily to the top and then back down. Speedometer did not move.

I removed the instrument cluster and unplugged the 2 connections. Plugged the 2 connections and reinstalled it. No change, speedometer still does not work.

What next?

You need a new cluster.
