94 Civic d13b2 stutters in 3rd and 4th under heavy acceleration
Hi everyone! My Civic is a 94 d13b2 1.3 16v carby engine and it has the most annoying issue ever. When the car stands still and I take off very fast, changing gears at 6-7000 RPMs, it runs perfectly but when I'm in 3rd or 4th (even in 2nd but rarely) at 2000 RPMs and suddenly decide to step on it (more than 1/4 of the throttle) the car begins to shake back and forth like it would want to stall. After the car reaches 3000-3500 RPMs everything goes back to normal and it revs flawlessly. I have no idle issues, the car idles fine, sometimes when it's hot it idles kinda low but never stalled or shaked. Tires and rims are ok, I can feel it's something related to fuel/ignition but I want to pinpoint the exact problem. Some people say that it might have something to do with the auto-choke. Could it be bad fuel? There's a gas station near home which I suspect they sell bad fuel (with impurities and maybe even water lol) but I had to buy gas from it the last couple of days because the fuel was really low.
Ok so that's one thing to check. If the spark plugs are the culprit for this problem, they might need replacing because the car ran fine until yesterday. Please correct me if I'm wrong (n00b, it's my first car). Can you give me another suggestion for what to check? I don't have much time on my hands because I'm working overtime this month so it won't be possible for me to go to a mechanic.
Hi! I checked the spark plugs. Didn't even have to remove them or check the distributor or coil, 2 had oil around them. Think I just found my problem. The thing is, i was planning to change the plugs anyway but i guess i might have to change the valve cover gasket seal too, right?

Yes there are 4 little gaskets that go on the valve cover at the top of the plug sleeves to prevent that. Glad it was simple. Those little gaskets are a pita to get off tho. There's a metal ring within them and after the years they've melted to your vc. So be ready to have to get down on those gaskets
I will go to a mechanic for this, i think i'll change the timing belt, paint the valve cover and bleed the cooling system while i'm at it. Yesterday i cleaned the air intake and carb just to be sure, there was a lot of dirt in that intake and all over the engine and hoses. I bought the car from a guy that didn't really care about it and i'm planning to do a full restoration.
I'm calling it a carb because frankly that's what it is. On top of what's in the picture goes a black box where the air filter stays and the intake is connected. Don't forget, the engine is a d13b2, Europe only, 1.3 16v 75 HP with what Honda calls a "PGM-Carb" (programmable carburetor) Source: wikipedia
What the hell lol. That's wild. Didn't realize you were out of the states. Carb in 94. Didn't know that existed my friend
It looks like a y7 manifold with a carb on top instead of a throttle body. If it's computerized then that essentially takes the simplicity of having a carburetor out of the picture

Yep, in Europe most of the EGs are powered by this little beast lol. There are newer cars with 75 HP and my eg kicks the s**t out of them
. Right now i'm facing a dilemma: put gsxr carbs on it (and other stuff) OR swapping to a d16z6 which is way nicer. For now this lil' engine will suffice 'cause i'm kinda poor and interested in mpg more than performance and other problems need solving more urgently like THE RUST.

Props to you buddy. People over here in the states complain about the d16 and you're looking up to it. I'm a d series man myself and hope you get the z6 swapped in

Of course he's looking forward to a D16, he has a D13 right now.

OP, oil on your plugs is definitely a problem. While you're having your mechanic do all of that work, also make sure they adjust the carb jets while they're in there.

Oh and one more thing. Should i bleed the coolant or just pour the new one in there? The liquid is low and that can't be good. (Had the radiator sprinkling water and i added a 2+2 Radiator sealing liquid)
Well...the thing is, i bought the car a few months ago, don't know if i mentioned it in earlier posts. The car sat for a while before me buying it (don't know for how long) because the insurance and road inspection were expired and the owner didn't want to invest in it since he had another car. I took it and drove it sooooo much because it's my first car and i was desperate to drive. The car ran fine since day one except the suspension which i replaced, but i didn't really care about fluids ('cause i was an idiot
) so the coolant was low from the beggining. What's in there...maaann i don't really wanna know, it might be clogged up. Yesterday i poured some water in the plastic recipient so it would reach the MAX indicator. Right now i'm thinking, yeahh, just bleed the whole thing, too bad money is short.
I watched a few videos about flushing the cooling system, it can be a DIY but i don't know if i wanna really do this, i might f**k up...
