Default Anyone use 10w-40 in there TL

Okay so I'm having a little knocking sound when I start my engine when it's warm, knocks couple times then it goes away doesn't do it while driving only start-ups...engine has 115k miles....someone told me if I go with a thicker oil 10w40 it will fix my problem, weather is not an issue I live in south Florida so always hot... Should i instead try 5w30/10w30 instead? Or try 10w40, im use to just putting 10w30 in my old integra...

I would suggest going with the 5w-20 or 5w-30. The tick or knock you're hearing might be something such as the power steering pump? TL engines are pretty durable as long as you take care of them properly.

thicker oil may mask the issue... but can accelerate wear or lead to starvation in other areas of the engine. I have found thinner - at startup (0w20 instead of 5w20) oil will silence noisy valve train more quickly after cold start. this suggests to me that the thinner oil is flowing more freely to the noisy areas and likewise to the highly loaded/high wear areas as well.

you can read all about this on

the takeaway: run the recommended weight. change it often. send a sample for analysis if you would like some empirical data to base your decisions on.

Find the source of the knock first. Thicker oil may make it worse or do nothing at all. Either way, thicker oil can be detrimental overall.

You probably just have to get your valves adjusted. It shouldn't cost more than $200ish at a decent shop.
