what oil on a boosted itr?
this goes out to the guys with itr w/ turbo. what oil are you guys using. i'm not boosted yet but trying to get as much info ahead of time as i can. i am currently using mobil 1 5w30. should i switch????
5w30 is way to thin IMO, your oil is getting hotter with the turbo. I run 10w60 Castrol RS, most people run 10w40 and some 10x50.
for stock motor cars 5 is fine. its the forged pistons that sometimes need
the thicker oil. even then i still use 5
We are talking about the oil thickness once the engine is at operating temps, right? So, we should look at the second number, xxW-60 is thicker than xxW-30.
The first number before W is only important for cold starts in the winter etc....
I use 0W-40 Castrol RS in the winter and 10W-60 Castrol RS at the track (in the summer).
BTW. 0 deg F = -18 Celcius

It takes awhile for
1. the engine to warm up
2. for the oil to circulate
when its cold. so the right oil is important.
BTW 0 degrees C = 0 degrees C
frankly, 5w30 and 10w30 are probably the only oils you would need.
Also something to keep in mind is that the farther the numbers are from each
other, the more polymers are involved to keep the oil stable. Its ideal to
have oil with the 2 numbers as close as possible

I know this.............Therfore I recommend at least 40 or higher for Turbo. 10 is not bad at all for winter.....look at your service manual....10 is good enough
I do not run my ITR in the winter.

Hahaha, I thought all Americans use Fahrenheit....
I don't know why everyone in the US is using xxW-30 oils. Everyone in Europe use xxW-40 oils. And a lot of race teams here use xxW-50 or xxW-60.

if it didnt get cold i'd just use straight 30 weight. maybe 40 at the most.

Allow me (and maybe Bror Jace
) to explain to you the North American mentality in using thinner oils. Oil companies have found that, by using thinner oils, fuel economy improves, BUT for the most part, engine wear increases. This is more apparent with the ITR since it redlines at 8000+ A typical North American trend since the early 90s is the lease option when purchasing a vehicle. A car manufacturer's thinking is "if the consumer brings back the car in 5 years after the lease has expired, who cares what condition the engine is in."I'm not saying the above are the sole reasons why North America uses thin oils, but just some major reasons. To recap:
- API is more political and corrupt than you think....and definitely behind ACEA in oil standardization.
- It's all about fuel economy and reducing CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) figures because the gas-guzzling SUVs and Trucks are the big money-makers in North America.
- Car manufacturer's want consumers back ASAP.
Aren't we a bunch of greedy bastards, or what?

Oz
P.S. North America means Canada and the US. You should also search the 24-page thread regarding oils here in the ITR forum. Search for the keyword "SuperSyn" and you will find it.
Check out the thread that never dies. If you have a turbo, I would stick with a minimum 10W30. I personally stick with 5W40 all-motor or force-induced. But that's my opinion.

thanks for the info and cunfusing the hell out of me. so what should i use. yes the car will be run in the winter.

Thanks Oz, for the explanation.
This explains why we can't even buy any xxW-30 oils here in Europe. The thinnest we can buy here is xxW-40...

I forgot to add another reason. Again, ACEA oil standars are way ahead of API. I believe the GF-3 standard requires oils to meet a value exceeding 3.5 in High Temperature/ High Shear tests. Only a select few of 30wt. oils can manage to pass that test (ie. Mobil Synths, AMSOIL, and Redline to name a few). It is easier to pass that test by using a thicker weight formulation such as a 40 weight.
I don't think I need to explain to you how High Temperature/High Shear tests relate to an engine
