Default BC Stg 2 NA cams into ITR

hey guys,

I have a Type R with a JDM 2000 ITR engine in it, I recently installed Brian Crower Stage 2 NA cams and I'm slightly concerned that the valvetrain might not be up to par, these are the cams I purchased.

http://www.briancrower.com/makes/honda/b16ab18c.shtml

the BC STG2 cams have a lift of 11.99/11.99mm where my valvetrain seems to be rated for a little less according to this link

Discussion about valve spring requirement

----------
Acura USDM 98-01/JDM 96-01 ITR Valve Springs
Variable or Linear: Linear
Seat Pressure: 50lbs
Max Lift: 11.5mm
Coil Bind: 11.7mm
Pressure @ 11.5mm/.453" lift: 150lbs
----------

thanks for any advice and help, it's appreciated.

You really answered your own question.

You need to replace your valvetrain with those cams.

The only aftermarket cams I know of that don't require new springs are Skunk2 Tuner 1s, and Buddy Club Spec 3.

I'm going to replace the cams with the original 98+ spec cams until I get valve springs, a slight oversight on my behalf. my other integra had a build head so I didn't think twice.

could there be any potential damage done by doing this? I drove the car nicely, under 4000rpm for maybe 50miles

You'd know if you dropped a valve.

You're fine.

that's good to hear, I pulled the valve cover to take a quick inspection and this is what I noticed on each cam lobe. I didn't drive the car today, and I'm going to replace the cams tonight with the factory ones. what do you think?

lol, thanks. I meant the weird wear just as the lobe tapers. I must be over thinking about this.

You are.

I see the marks you are talking about, but they don't look they are dug into the cam, it looks like a surface abrasion. I don't know what caused it, but it's not really a big deal, if you understand how cams work, that shouldn't cause any issues. I would definitely change out the valvetrain though, if you do end up hitting VTEC you will most likely coil bind those springs and drop a valve and experience catastrophic engine failure.

the 98's are going back in tonight, I'm just nervous that the rocker arms (I believe?) could have the same markings / damage now, no idea what could have caused them. my friend suspects bad casting on the cams themselves, but look "normal" to him as if they're "polishing" or "breaking in" kinda-thing, there's a texture difference but that's it, and the markings are identical on each cam lobe, a generous amount of assembly lube was used in the installation, and everything torqued to spec.

IDK, I'd ask someone like Derek what he thinks, but they look fine to me.

I really miss Don F.

Ya that lift is the max lift @ Vtec, the primarys and secondary dont lift that much unless you had Drag/strip Vtec killer camshafts.

Correct. Meaning if you don't hit VTEC, you won't have a problem. So if you really stayed below 4K, no harm no foul. But if you switch over to that VTEC lobe, you're going to have a bad time.

Also, I'll see about having this moved to All Motor so the right people can see those cam marks.
