Default Is it good to remove the resonator of the stock air box?

Will it produce more power or just loss power?
If it can produce more power, how can i remove the resonator?
is it necessary to remove the front bumper or anything?

Its best to remove the entire airbox...that is your biggest restriction. If you are going short ram pipe then you don't have to take out the resonator. But if you are going CAI, then you'll need to remove it. Yes it is a bitch to get out. I had to remove the front, but I don't think you have to.

you can gain anywhere from 5 to 20whp by losing the stock airbox

you lose 2hp from removing only the resonator

You do not need to remove the front end.

Jack up car. Place on stands. remove front right wheel. Take out wheel liner. Remove the 2 10mm bolts that hold the resonator in place. Pull out the resonator. Put everything else back in. All done.

i thought it was pretty easy to just take off the front bumper. more play room you know.

Definately no need to remove the front bumper...but if you have time go for it. It only makes it easier.

I just pulled the splash guards out a bit and it was fine...

Never taken the bumper off for an intake install.

And taking the resonator out of a Type-R loses power on all the R's I have dyno tested. as little as 3whp to as much as 6 whp. Not something I would suggest.

how about just removing the resonator, but safety wiring the tube that connects from the bottom of the intake box and runs down to about where the turn signal light is. i did that and it works just like a comptech icebox, except is cost me pennies to do.

The stock airbox is very good. Why is it our biggest restriction?

The resonator is SO EASY to take out it isn't even funny. Jack up the passenger front and remove the fenderwell. From there, it is self explanitory on how to get the resonator out.

I hope you are joking. 5 to 20 WHEEL HP by losing the stock airbox? I'd like to know what applications provide that much whp. I'd really like to know what is wrong with the stock airbox. Please explain where you found these numbers and provide some REAL evidence to suggest that your claim is true. I won't hold my breath.

DON'T remove the resonator unless you are putting some sort of CAI in your car. You will lose power and it has been dyno tested, and you CAN tell the difference around town. If you want loud intake wallop, get a short ram, a J's or an AEM. Taking off the top of the stock air box is NOT a good solution, as you will lose power this way, too.

Is the design of the Mugen air-box good? it doesn't have a resonator also

can i just remove the resonator and cut the piping to absorb air from front bumper?

and also could anyone post the pics of the difference between GSR and Type-R Intake hoses design again?
I try to search but couldn't find it. I've remember that GSR sucks air from next to the ABS system but Type-R don't

You will lose low end power with a short ram that isn't insulated from the hot engine bay. I have one and it has been sitting in the basement since I acquired the stock intake box.

I like the comptech though, tube feeding the airbox is much wider then the stock box (83mm at narrowest point, the stock is about 70mm)

My suggestion is when you remove the resonator you can run a duct right underneath the stock air box and run it infront of the radiator. It is a comptech look alike but you actually have more ram air to the stock filter box.

What about just keeping the stock ITR intake but adding a K&N drop in filter? What gains have you guys seen from this? thanks

Drop in filters generally do not do much...I would personally get a comptech foam filter because it filters very well. Just gotta clean it often

I tried to dig up the thread that Big_Phat_R posted on a while back about his experience with the comptech drop in....

maybe it wasn't him... so dun get your panties in a knot guys...but the Comptech filter gave him a little more meat in the VTEC Xover. More than the 0.1-1whp range that you would see at the PEAK.

I'd be wary of losing the stock resonator because the reponse is really soggy without it esp. at lower RPM....but this is my butt dyno....yours will vary!

K&N drop in for me netted 1.5 whp and exact same curve at VTEC.

Im wondering if it is even worth it to spend the money to get a cold air or just stick with stock air box with K&N filter, and use the money else wear.

I think you will see a bigger gain with a header than anything else but it seems the intake starts to matter as you change other parts.

Yeah, I'd recommend not removing it unless you're replacing it with a CAI or Comptech intake. I've had mine off for the past 6 months and the car just isn't as responsive as it was with the resonator on. It's actually really bad when the car is hot and you sitting at a standstill trying to accelerate. The car feels very flat, but livens up with speeds when more cooler air enters the fenderwell.
