I got a D16Y8 that is knocking after main bearings replaced. I don't have the money to get an engine for it yet and it's not my daily car anymore. I am keeping it as a project car.

Anyways, I got an idea after reading around and I changed the oil to 15w50 today and it's knocking a lot lesser now. It is running pretty smooth as well. Since I live in Phoenix, AZ, it gets pretty hot right now and I don't worry about it.

The question is, during winter time, although it only gets down to about 45 F, is it safe to run it? According to the oil viscosity chart, it seems to be ok but has anyone done it before?

 

no. hell no. you used an old used car salesman trick to quiet that engine. the root issue still exists, and i would **** a golden brick if that engine makes it to winter.

 

Run whatever you want, its a project car. Once that engine fails than do whatever you want AGAIN. Run that **** with water for all I car, its not a DD so **** it.

 

Right. I ask because I do move this car around once a day or so, from drive way to the street parking. I read somewhere that in winter, I would have to warm up the car first before I start moving it.

It would be very inconvenient for me to push it around or leave it in once place for a long time at the moment.

 

I've never heard of using oil that thick in these tiny engine but **** do what you feel works out for that .003 miles of moving it in/out of the driveway.
