Default 99 Civic Si engine worries - B16A swap

So, excuse my lack of knowledge but I think I may have a problem but I'm not sure. The engine for the 99-00 Civic Si is the B16A2, correct? Well, stamped on my engine block, it only says B16A. Its still bolted up to the same transmission. The previous owner said he had the engine rebuilt but it was the same block. Is this normal? Is there a way to check for sure? Wikipedia says the B16A is 10 hp less, has a lower redline and lower vtec engagement than the B16A2. Mine seems to have the same engagement points as listed for the A2. Also, I read on a thread that the distributor for the B16A will not bolt right onto an A2. Well, I recently replaced mine and it fits without an issue. Any ideas?

If the block is stamped b16a it's a jdm motor. Which is vice versa of what you said. The b16a has 10 more hp and a higher redline. Not lower, the usdm b16a2's have lower hp and redline. You said you found that on Wikipedia? Hmm.

Check your head casting code as well it's right under the valve cover.

I'm sorry, I was looking at the B16A1 on wiki not B16A. It seems you're right. The block definitely says B16A. However, I can't find the casting code. Is it on the lip of the valve cover and block, or is it like a little metal plate? How many digits should it be?

The number right underneath the stamp is 5600536 I believe it's the serial number.

Sorry to say bud, but thats a different motor than belongs in your car.

Another surefire way to know, on the bottom portion of the block, right against your oil pan, likely behind your exhaust manifold, should be the VIN plate, like this guy

It is supposed to look identical to the one on your transmission there, same VIN, same color, same 1HG being white and the rest not, etc.

If that's missing and it doesn't look like its been removed, that's a different pizza than you ordered.

Sorry bud.

I appreciate the input, man. I'm pretty okay with it if the JDM spec engine is equally or more powerful. It could be more desirable to some people. Now I'm just curious about how it got in there. The previous owner didn't seem to know to much about the car, it makes me wonder how an idiot like him got a hold of the block. And the original owner was some girl. That's all I know. I may contact her.

Either the previous owner lied, or the guy BEFORE him lied, simple as that.
It was likely imported by either a local shop that did the swap, or some shade-tree guy off of a site akin to hmotorsonline.com, though they put a stamp on the block indicating they imported it (HMO stamped in an oval generally right next to, or on the block code)

Hate to tell you as well, the B16 is desirable for a decent B-series swap with OK returns, but the EM1 with original motor/trans with matching VIN's is harder to find, it's why I decided not to swap a B18c into mine and boost it, and instead keep it bone stock, aside from bragging rights (for what they're worth lol)

I suppose you're right. Stock is usually worth more, but it depends. Besides, by the time I'm done driving it, it won't be worth much anyways haha. I'm probably not gonna sell it lol. Post some pics of yours, I'd like to see it.

It's the one in the middle.

Yeah the b16a is diff a upgrade. Most likely it's lower mileage also.

Gotcha. I don't feel like removing my heat shield to check that. I'm almost positive it's not the original engine. The previous owner mentioned having the engine rebuilt but he never said anything about a swap. Perhaps he put a new block in, and accidentally got a hold of the B16A block? Who knows. He said it only has 60,xxx miles on it. But who knows how true that is. It runs strong, and I take good care of it. I don't think I'll be having any troubles I was just curious.

The reason why your engagement is the same is because you're probably using the p2t ecu that came with the em1. Also if there is no vin on the block than no it did not come from the same car and that motor doesn't look rebuilt at all. All usdm honda's have an additional character/digit after the 4rd character, b18c => b18c1/b18c5, b18b => b18b1, d16a => d16y7/d16y8/d16y5/d16z6

"Almost" positive? You should be positive. USDM 99-00 SI's all came with a B16A2. You have a B16A. It isn't the original engine. Period.
