Ok so I have a 1996 honda civic with a D16Y5 5 speed and the cars turns and starts great but it will not go into gear. Here's some other things.

- If I start the car in a gear it will drive but I can't change gears

- If I start the car in neutral and force it into any gear the car will die

- Doesn't really feel as though the clutch is engaging but I'm not sure as this is my first manual car

Any tips or thoughts would be great. Thanks.

 

If you put it in gear without starting the car what happens?

 

Sounds like a clutch or clutch hydraulic system issue.

Is the pedal spongy or misadjusted?

 

It goes into gear not exactly the smoothest just a little rough

 

Not sure what you mean by misadjusted. But it feels like nothings there

 

Is the fluid reservoir topped off?

Any fluid leaking from top of clutch pedal onto the carpet?
