Default Transmission Problems

I have a 96 accord coupe. I was driving home on the highway when my 5th gear kept popping outout. I slowed down and put it in 4rth, after a bit there was a couple of bangs and I couldn't shift my car into gear. I pulled over and my car was over heating. I let it sit for a bit and was able to limp it to a gas station and fill it up with water. When I trying to limp it home it made another loud bang and then I couldn't get it to move at all. Now the gears don't engage at all.

My questions are. How do I start to diagnose what happened? What probably happened? How Hard Is it to fix? What can I do to fix this?

Sorry for the confusion I'm a bit stressed this is my only transportation. Any help would be great
