OP, if you are capable of learning/driving manual, swap the trans. It'll be more fun to drive and give you more possibilities down the road.
Don't mod Auto Hondas for power, the trans will quickly fail

The secret to learning to drive a stick shift...learn to control the gas pedal.
Get a feel for revving the engine between 1000 and 2500 rpm.
Later, as you let out the clutch, focus on the gas pedal and don't let the engine speed drop, below 1500 rpm.

There is no such thing as a USDM GSR Auto. It's a JDM SIR-G Auto.
JDM P72 AT ECU (Dual butterflys valves) or JDM P30 AT ECU (Single butterflys valve). will control the shift points. There is allot more just to slap a head on and wired. There are allot of other things that need to be done if you want it reliable.
I have a built GS/VTEC AT. Search the forums and other website it's been covered many time.
