Along with my new (to me) Civic and my new registration on this site, i also bring a new thread!
I got my second Civic and I'm looking to get an exhaust system for it .. It has the original D16Y8 VTEC inside with a STOCK exhaust getting a big thumbs down! My old sedan came with a 4-2-1 header with a flat downpipe to a 2.25" exhaust system straight pipe with a res to a OBX-R Twin Loop muffler .. I liked the sound of that and then swapped from the downpipe back .. it now has a 2.5" catless system to a res to a Yonaka Motorsports muffler with a 4.25" tip ..
Sorry for dragging this out, i really am: i like the sound of the yonaka but it didnt line up right on his coupe and my old sedan, the tip sat angled to the left and obnoxiously stuck out from the bumper
I dont feel like spending $600 for another Yonaka (even though i liked it) to have to go through the hassle of returning it if for say it has the same problem on my new coupe
What i need to know
Im looking and found a J2 Engineering system for $300 that i really like and cant seem to find a video on the sound to give me an idea.. this is a 2.5" system which will also be catless to a res to the muffler out of a 3.5" tip, i also am going to get the 4-2-1 header and downpipe .. i want it to be loud, but dont want a crappy, raspy(could care less), RICEY sounding exhaust .. other words i dont want the ebay no name brand sound .. i like the look and the fitment looks flush considering the fact the pic shows an eg when i have a ek.... Opinions??
Pro-tip: You get what you pay for. If a $600 exhaust (you severely overpaid - it's only $230 on their website) didn't fit right, what makes you think a $300 exhaust will?
If you want a good exhaust, skip getting a "full system". Get a piping kit. Any cheap piping kit will do. Now get the resonator, cat, and muffler that you want. You now have a full, complete system, customized to exactly what you want, for the best price you can find.

Thanks for the info, ill def look into it.. i guess my main question for this topic would be, have u heard about j2 engineering? Are they reputable company that produces a quality product .. im looking for a nice sound, not a cheap no name sound

Agree with this. You can also usually get a completely custom exhaust done at an exhaust shop for cheaper than you would pay for a mid level bolt-on exhaust. I got 2.5" stainless steel done for about $300 + the cost of the muffler and resonator that I chose and it's all welded, not clamped together.
I like that the tip is less than 4".
I'll have to keep them in mind if/when I need a new exhaust for my civic.
The closer the tip diameter is to the piping diameter, the better.

+1. My current exhaust setup consists of piping, a resonator, high flow cat, and muffler all bought separately, and welded together at a local shop. I think I'm all in for under $400 on it.

Arbitrary statements like this hold no water, and have no place in tech. Better for what? It certainly won't have any appreciable effect on power or sound.

I'm planning on running a cat-less system on my ride, one of the reasons being that the men in uniform where I live have nothing better to do than hate on a Honda, and when my old Civic was runnin' a 2.5" cat-less system to the 4.25" tip on the Yonaka I got stopped every other day .. I feel like this system is nice definitely looks wise, sound? I don't know ahah
Soo are you saying that 2.5" piping is a power drainer on a stock D16?
yes, i am. my track car has a bigger engine and a 2.25" exhaust. mega huge exhaust diameters do nothing on a d series engine. you may actually see power go down, but at least itll sound cool.

I think I am mainly looking for sound and looks outta the D series .. I definitely want it to go fast don't get me wrong, but I want it loud AND fast lol .. I do in fact plan on a swap in the future tho!
As for right now, it's about fixing cosmetics and looks.. Once winter time comes around, I plan to take it off the road and swap it
Power going down is correct to this specific application, but doesn't tell the whole story. A larger diameter exhaust shifts the torque band upwards. For a D series engine, 3" piping moves it so far up, that it's well out of the engine's rev range. Even 2.5" is too big for NA. eghatch is right on point with 2.25".

On a real tho, power going down?? Not cool xD
Spray your engine chrome if you want to bling out the D-series.
Thats sad that you spent 600 on an exhaust system that only cost 250.. be a better shopper dude and search around. And I don't mean post in this section "where is the best place to buy XYZ"

Oh **** my bad i must not have worded that correctly . What i meant by that was my previous civic had the $600 yonaka .. i didnt pay for it, it came on my buddies car when he bought his and i traded him .. lol i just want a brand new system hahaha sorry bout the confusion on that
You have to remember, eghatch, Yonaka is the kind of company that always has their stuff "on sale", so it looks like you're getting a deal. Right now, their full exhaust systems for the 6G are $249.99, "discounted from $449". Same with their mounts. "On sale" for $79.99, "regularly" $299. When I bought my mounts from them, something like 6 months ago, they were (you guessed it) $79.99.
They just do it to make it look like you're getting a better deal than you actually are.
In my opinion I have always had better luck with a custom exhaust made by my local muffler shop. They will have an idea what muffler will sound best. Typically they will put a magnaflow or a flowmaster which will have a deeper tone. That's just my 2 cents but like others have said you get what you pay for. Cheers!
