I am replacing the head on my F22b2 with a reman head.

Anyway I took the head off and did not loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt first.

How do I get it off now as I need to swap the sprocket over to my new head.

Go to Oreilly's, they should have a tool for immobilzing the cam sprocket, it kind of looks like a tap handle. Clamp that onto the cam gear and break the bolt loose while holding the handle.

 

I'll assume you are putting on new timing belts.....you could try to use the old belt as a "holder", wrap the old belt around the cam gear.

Of course an impact would be nice and have that off in no time.

 

Ok - I have never heard of that tool but I was going there tomorrow anyway to pick up some things and I will see if they have one.

 

I was going to purchase a 1/2" drive to 3/8" so I could try my impact but my impact is a POS and never seems to work on anything.

Hopefully I can find the cam holder that the other poster was talking about.

Not sure what you mean about the timing belt, I already have the head off the car, I am replacing the timing belt, how can I use the old one as a 'holder'?

wrap a wrench in a microfiber towel so you don't damage anything and cram it in one of the spokes...

impact as a last resort

 

You need a spanner wrench.

 

Thanks for the idea, I have a set of these I use to change motorcycle clutches. I'll try those out and see if they work.

 

Ever used a "strap wrench"? Same idea.

The thing is like less than 30 ft lbs so I would think even a POS impact would do something.

Anyway, several ideas for you to "give a go with"....good luck.

 

I used to own one of those strap wrenches. I haven't seen it in years, I must have 'lent' it to someone along the way.

Anyway I got it off no problem using the above tool (motorcycle clutch tool).

Right now I am working on putting it all back together.

 

I just did the timing belt in my 91 Accord and had a similar issue. What I did was put the timing belt back on and used a socket on the crank to hold it in place and prevent it from spinning. Then using a long ratchet I broke the camshaft bolt lose.

When you take the gear off MAKE SURE YOU DON'T LOSE THE KEY!
Its very small and easy to lose. Also make sure you put it back in the correct way.
