Black Molding on the Roof of the Hatchback
I'm shaving all the emblems that I haven't already done when I paint my car. I also want to take the cover off where the antenna goes and fill those holes. It's just 2 real small ones for the screws and one big one. I can use plastic or fiberglass filler for the small ones, but the big one's over an inch wide so I think I have to weld a piece of metal over it. The problem is that it's so close to that thin black molding that goes from the front to the back of the roof that I'll probably burn it when I'm welding. I know that you can never get the side moldings back on the same way, does anyone know if that's how this is? Is it just glued to the roof or is there little clips or something? If you've taken this off before, did you have trouble getting it back on right?
...or does anyone know a better way to fill the hole for the antenna?

welding will be the best way. not sure how good of a body man you are but if you cut a small piece of metal to sit inside the hole flush and just tack it around the insert. only do like one tack at a time and use an airline to cool the tack and you wont get any kind of warping and be sure to cover that piece of plastic with some tape or some kind of material it will save it and your glass from splatter.with the small holes start the screws into the hole and use a cut off wheel to cut the head off. tack that screw in and then grind and smooth the whole piece. use a little bit of body filler to cover any small cracks. if you do it and keep the welded spot cool you shouldnt have any prob. hope this helps a little
with welding the peice in you can use a gel stuff (i cant think of the name of it right now) it is meant to keep things cool all you have to do is put sowm like an inch outside of where you welding and the metal outside of the gel will not get hot at all. i have another sugestion though....i think its alot easier to use matte and resin (like a fiberglass repair kit) all you have to do is pound it down alil bit around the hole so it has somthing to hold to then grind it off roughly and just fill it with body fill adn you will be all set....if you just fill the screw holes without pounding them in the fill will just push in and fall out....hope this helps
