Default Transmission noise on 94 civic

I have a 1994 civic ex with a D16Z6 engine in it. When driving last week I noticed that when the car is on neutral and the clutch pedal is out there is a small rubbing noise coming from under the hood. When the clutch pedal is in there isn't a noise. From the research I have done sounds like it might be the input shaft bearing in the transmission. Noise isn't very loud and I cant hear it in gear because of the exhaust noise. Wondering ways to help pin point the problem and how to fix it. Sounds like its gonna be a pain in the butt and lots of work if its a bearing. Also wondering about place to get parts and must have tools to do the job.

Answer: Transmission main bearing, generally the input shaft bearing.

OP - How loud is the noise?

OP if I were you I would just shop for a replacement transmission. Not saying you can't pop the case and change the bearing it's just a huge pain in the *** especially if this is your daily and need it up and running ASAP.

The noise is a light rubbing noise when the car is idling in neutral. The exhaust isn't stock so it is pretty loud. Need to have the radio off to hear the noise. Not sure if this is helpful but from the research I have done I would say it is starting to go but not totally shot.

If you can hear the bearing(s) above a loud exhaust, then you should probably replace. I have a stock engine and exhaust, so my Civic (160K miles) is pretty quiet. With the transmission in neutral, I can hear my transmission main bearings with the clutch pedal up, but I must listen carefully to notice.

Think im gonna tear it apart and take a shoot at replacing the bearing myself. Now wondering about parts and what brand to buy. Also fifth grinds when I shift into it so thinking its a synchro that needs to be replaced. Also wondering about tools needed. Gonna rent a gear puller and a feeler gauge from an auto parts store. I have a torque wrench, socket set and silicone to seal the case after I am done. Anything else I need for this project?
