NEED ANSWERS
I have a 1999 Honda accord Ex, the car just got a new water pump radiator cap and thermostat but the temp gauge still rises during long drives and water steam comes out the water reservoir. I don't see any leaks but I do see a little little puddle of water after I turn it off form but little drops nothing major. What could still be causing this
Are you familiar with a block test? If so I would test it for a minor head gasket leak. You can buy a tester at Napa for about 45.00. Or go by any cool automotive shop and use theirs. They should charge but 10-20 dollars. It is a purple liquid that you hold over the radiator cap opening on the radiator. With the engine running you draw air from the radiator (and engine so make sure thermostat has opened at least once) and if there is any combustion gases inside the radiator the purple liquid will turn yellow letting you know (for sure) if there is a leak at the head gasket. I say that because normally when a water pump goes bad the engine overheated and could have rupture the gasket. Also be careful not to draw up any coolant as this will skew the results! Hope that helps.
Also a bad radiator cap can cause coolant to overflow into the reservoir but not let in flow BACK INTO the radiator. This cause it to become low inside the radiator/block but over fill the reservoir. It is a long shot but possible. I have also seen them sell new caps that are the wrong size from the parts store (the depth of the shaft/rubber stopper not the actual diameter of the cap itself). You can normally tell because the cap is harder to put on and can score the plastic opening of the radiator.
If it is a large head gasket leak it will spit out white smoke but that is only if it is large. You can have a bad head gasket and get NO smoke out of the tail pipe. That is why they have a tool (block test) to diagnose them. I believe every shop SHOULD have one but if your guy doesn't then try a different shop. I know it is company policy for all company owned Firestones to have one at their stores.
This is a youtube video showing you the test.

I know it may seem like a pain in the *** but you need to make the time and get the block test done. Trying figure it out by looking at the reservoir, looking for smoke etc. is a lazy way to diagnose your car. PLEASE take the time to go get a test performed so you know 100% if you have a bad head gasket or not. If you don't have a bad head gasket(very possible), then we can check some other stuff. Please report back the block test results.
When you have already determined the cooling system has no leaks, T.stat is good and the fans operate correctly...
Typically, overheating on a longer drive, like the freeway (where there is lots of air moving across radiator) indicates a head gasket problem.
still could be a small chance of failed catalyst or lean condition, but you might get a code or have a misfire to accompany these.
