Default LSD Bearings being destroyed ??

Need some advise here. I have a GSR transmission with a Mfactory LSD. I had the LSD installed by a local proffesional shop. Since I had the LSD installed, its been destroying the bearings. This is the 2nd time it does it again. Both times installed by the same shop. Prior to the install of the LSD, I've never had one single issue with my transmission. Can anybody advise on what may be causing the bearing to be destroyed? Has anybody out there had a similar issue before? Also is there a slight possiblity that the LSD could be the problem? Maybe it warped or out of balance? I'm just trying to think of all the possibilites. Any advise would be helpful.

I doubt this has anything to do with the LSD. What shims are being used in the case? I have seen this before when the original tapered bearing spacer shim was used with a ball bearing conversion.

The bearings and shims used were all new OEM. I dont remember what sizer or specs were used though. Is there a certain type of shim that needs to be used with a ball bearing conversion? Also my transmission was 98+ , so shouldnt of it already had ball bearing in it ?

Could have bad run out or shimmed improperly. You shim it based on the measurement you get. You shouldn't EVER just slap in the same thickness shims when you swap differentials of any kind. If the measurement ends up being the same, then so be it, but it should ALWAYS be checked and appropriate shims installed.

Besides the already mentioned shimming I have seen guys smash bearings on. They should be pressed on using the inner race only. Smashing them or pressing using the outer race is a no-no and can dent the ***** and race.

As already said, it just sounds like you slapped the new lsd in there without reshimming. You gotta measure and order the correct shim for the new lsd.

Changing cases, shafts, lsds, require a measurement and new shim or the clearances will either be too tight or loose for the bearings or assembly as a whole to function properly.

Finally got my transmission running right. To all who said it was " improperly shimmed" , well you were correct. The clearances were to loose and the LSD basically had to much play. I guess that is the best way to explain it. The kit from Synchrotech for GSR swap was all I needed. By the way, they have top notch customer service .

Excessive end play in the differential will destroy bearings when a large load is placed on it. Look at the bearing races for signs of brinelling (impact damage marks by the bearing ***** on the races). If you have this type of damage, excessive end play is a likely cause. Excessive load also plays a part in this.

Even though ball bearing units are ideal for the DIY crowd, a properly setup tapered roller bearing assembly is very durable and not nearly as prone to this type of damage.

Disassemble the bearings and take clear pictures of the raceways and gear wear. Also tell us what the installed end play was (if you know this).

just wondering if you had checked to see what the clearance was when it was improperly shimmed. And runnerdown is right, always use the inner race to get those bearings on
