Hey guys. I have a '96 accord chassis sitting in my garage with a 93 h22a sitting in the engine bay. its been sitting there for almost 2 years. I'm getting tired of looking at it. I was wondering if any of you guys know what it takes to make this car smog legal (register car with h22a as engine) IN CALIFORNIA!!!. I met a guy with a crx the other day with a b16 and the car was registered as a CRX with a DEL SOL b16a. SMOG LEGAL. I was at a party and I forgot to ask details on how he got that done. I know its possible. If you guys know, PLEASE reply to this post. I would really like to get the car back on the street, or at least sellable. If I can get it running again and smoggable, I would probably sell my gsr and drive the accord around again. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know any info if you guys know of any. I've been mulling over this all night. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

I think I will need an engine that is at least the same year or newer than the chassis? is that correct? just adding on to my post.
Well I know here in AZ, that the engine you place in your car has to be the same year or newer. I am not positive, but I am pretty sure CA is the same way. In this case, you engine is 3 years older than your car.... I know that doesn't help your question, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Yeah, I was planning on taking the 93 h22a out and buying a 96 h22 IF I know getting the car registered and smoggable with the h22a wont be a hassle. If not, I will probably just buy an f22 and try to put it back to stock so i can sell it. Would any of you guys know how much a complete f22 goes for nowadays?
just look on this site, many people sell it, but i bet is less than 500 bucks, i would recomend putting the stock engine in, and sell the H22A for the price it cost you the F22 and the swap, and you'll end up with your stock car again without putting money in it. good luck
Can't you register it in another state. If I could, I would register your cars for you in Ohio with no SMOG or even emissions testing....
93 H22 in 96 Accord will be illegal. In the state of California you can only drop in same year or newer. Also, it must have all smog equipment from that year...i.e. its got to be a long block with its EGR, a charcoal canister, etc. I believe your suppose to run the correct ECU, and CPU too.
Rationale behind this is that CARB views newer engines & newer emmissions controls as being less polluting than any previous system; a same year or newer will pollute less.

I got mine to pass and I got a cool sticker from the ref too. I ended up using a 98 H22A4 and dropping it in my 97 Accord. All the emissions crap plugged right up since the engine was already OBD2. I had to lengthen and shorten a cople of wires but that was basically it. I ended up using a JDM P5M because it didn't have the immobilizer. I fired it up with no check engine light. Just to be safe, I smogged the car with my Accord ecu and passed the test....no problem.
Also, the engine cannot be from a car not sold in this country. A JDM engine is, technically, illegal. If the smog station cares enough to run the engine numbers through its computers, you'd be in serious bind. Of course, there are places that look the other way for those motors...
ECU's don't apply to the engine law, however. It doesn't matter where those came from.

take it to some shady car shop and pay some money under the table and they will pass you. thats how all my boys with their jdm motors do it. i know of a few places in SoCal that do it.
