I wouldn't think you would be able to see the gauges as well cause i dont think the light would shine nearly as brite due to the paint. I haven't ever tried to paint them, but i do know that people buy those little rubber caps to slip over the bulbs. You can also take off the rubber caps on the bulbs that are in there now or just switch them up and it will change the way it looks alot.
I painted the bulbs on my std gauge cluster and it's looked great! I painted them red to match the red capped lights from my Autometer gauges. The light shined through perfectly. But when I swapped in the GSR cluster I just left the bulbs white and pulled the red caps off my gauges. I just used Krylon paint. That stuff will stick to anything! Good Luck
I did mine with testors paint over a month ago and still shining bright....looks A LOT better then just buying the plain amber bulbs from sylvania imo.
Here's the thread I made a while back https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=304289 since then I had a bunch of people try it as well and have had great success with it as well.
