Default What is your best AllMotor B18B1 Setup?

Does anyone know how to get 165-180 HP out of a B18B1 going ALLMOTOR?

I'm going LS/VTEC, but just wanted to know if someone can give me a little bit-O-B18B1 inspiration>and to compare B18B1 setups/mods?

Decent power can be made... but it's alot more economical to just install a VTEC head rather than dumping tons of money into working a non-VTEC head... which most likely will still not outflow a stock VTEC cylinder head.

You need to concentrate the work in the head. Build the head with crower 404's and their valve springs/retainers kit and get a nice port job.

You can go with either the b18a/b or b20 for the bottom end. Get high comp pistons and strong rods. Try to get your hand on a b16, gsr or type R tranny for better acceleration.

Your idle will suffer a bit, you will get poor gas mileage but that's the price to pay when you take the non-vtec route. Expect 180+ wheel horse power with that set up.

Good luck

I built a N/A ls motor for a guy that made 178whp on pump gas. It was with civic type r pistons, jg ported head, crower 405's (i think that's the number, the "race only" cams), type R manifold modified to fit ls head, jdm type r header, remapped ecu (just raised rev limiter), and Apex afc and itc. The car idled pretty shitty and we had to use the itc to take alot of timing out at higher rpm on pump gas because of the compression. It was a very strong setup but the powerband was kinda narrow for a street car. The vtec head will easily make that power and be alot more streetable. Hell, it would even be cheaper to do the vtec head. I built this motor before anyone was putting vtec heads on ls blocks.

What kind of compression did you get with the CTR pistons into the ls block? When i had my '88 civic back in 96 i wanted to do something similar to yours but back then there was no shop up here to do that kinda job Then i smashed the civic and bought the 92 integra. Wish i'd still have the '88 civic weight

The compression was very high! I never ran the numbers but I would guess somewhere around 12.5:1 or so. This is why we had to use the apex itc (timing controller). With this we were able to get a lot of power because without it we had to retard base timing to 2 deg. to get it to stop pinging. With the itc i was able to advance the timing in the midrange and take it out up top. Don't even try this setup without a timing controller!! Once we got it dialed in it ran really good and I think it would have made quite a bit more on race gas since we had so much timing out of it.

thanks. For now i have the stock b20z block but i plan to bump the comp @ about 11.1:1 max....nothing to high, i wanna keep it streetable.

And what do u mean by a timing controler?

Our B18B/A head packages with valvetrain and custom Exospeed cam are pushing out between 165-175 with IHE. this is on a stock block and unmilled head.

it all comes down to preference. certain combinations such as LSVtecs will make good power, but its all up to you on what you really want to do. staying LS, is just like Staying single cam. just because its not "VTEC" doesnt mean its worthless. good luck in your project.

Good point. And i like it when i pop my hood all you see...is the "stock" and original engine. So you don't get the kind of excuses like: "You did a swap, not fair"

By "timing controller" i mean a means of which to adjust timing at certain rpm points. It works just like an afc only for timing.

I made 158whp at 7100rpm on a single run, untuned and with a bottom end that had just burnt 2.75L of oil in 1800 miles! I am completing the motor this winter and will be tuning it in the summer, I will keep ya'll posted.

I have b18b1 with stage 2 Brian crower, spring and retainers block stock skunk2 intake and headers , 550cc grams injectors and the 1st pull was 169 hp on dyno .
