Default 88si tranny question!!

Now is this tranny good(88si)? whats the difference in 88, 89, & 90-91 Si trannys for a CRX. do they all perform the same and are they all equal strength trannys?

Will it bolt up to my d16y8? Whats the best clutch to get for it?

btw... I have a 90 CRX Si (mainshaft bearing is going on my tranny).. so i bought an 88si tranny entirely rebuilt by Honda with 1500k on it.

i thought cable those were cable trannys for CRX's, and arent the 92-00 SOHC's hydro trannies? just what i herd from a friend with a CRX..... then on the other hand.... he doesnt know jack, but in his mind he knows all

im guessing the differance in the trannys if any would be gears, how short or long they would be

go with an ACT clutch

nope. you have to get an 88 si clutch and flywheel since the 88 is a 21 spline count and the 89-91 are a 20 spline count.

Another option would be to use your 90 flywheel and pressure plate mated with a 86-89 accord clutch disk. The 86-89 accord uses a 212mm disk with a 21 spline input shaft. Hope this helps.

the accord clutch might work, but his 90 flywheel is 20 spline, not 21 right? so that wouldn't work?

maybe i'm confused as its been a while since i looked at a flywheel, but doesn't the flywheel need to have the same spline count as the clutch?

The flywheel doesn't have splines, only the pilot bearing which is the same from 88-91. The pilot bearing accepts the end of the input shaft. The major difference in the flywheels is the amount of surface area for the clutch to mate to. That is why you alway want to use a flywheel and clutch from the same years.

I hope this clears things up.

I can't really say if one is better than the other. I will say this, Honda only offered the 190mm for one year. In 89 they bumped it to 200mm and then to 212mm in 90. They stayed with the 212mm clutch for the next 12 years. The 212mm disk should have more surface area than the 190mm unit. So I guess in "theory" the 212mm would be the best solution. That being said keep in mind that you don't want the accord clutch kit. All you need is the 86-89 accord clutch disk. You will still use the 90-91 civic/crx pressure plate and flywheel.

you can use all 88si components (clutch, flywheel, pressure plate).

or you can go hybrid with the 90 flywheel and pressure plate with the 86-89 accord clutch.

ok now I'm going with the 90 pressure plate and flywheel W/89 accord disk.. so which throw out bearing & pilot bearing do i use for the 88 SI tranny, the same for the tranny??? I do need both pilot and throw out bearings right?? OR are both the same bearing?

you will need a throwout bearing for an 88 si.

as for the pilot bearing, i would go with the 88si one, but i am not 100% sure on that. if you get the parts from honda, ask if you can return them free of charge if you end up needing the 89 accord one.

and the throwout bearing goes on the transmission where the pilot bearing goes on the flywheel.

you can see the pilot bearing in the center of the fywheel.

All the 88-91 civics/crx's use the same pilot bearing. I would imagine that they use the same throw out bearing as well. The parts guy should be able to confirm this though.

That's cool, I never knew the accord clutch disc had a 21 spline count! So with your setup ('90 pressure plate, accord disc, '90 flywheel) it will perform exactly like if you had the entire '90 clutch assembly!

Good luck! Y8 = (if fuel/vtec is tuned properly)

if you look closely at the part #'s on act's upgrade kit for the 88 the disc will match up to the 86-89 accord disc and the pp will match to the 90-91.. right now im runing this setup with a 90 flywheel..
