Icon3 motherf!@#in 3rd gear!!!

Alright, so unbeknownst to me, I bought a 2007 si a couple weeks ago from the original owner. A sweet, older lady. In my area, they're selling for around 12k; I picked this one up for 8500. It's a little rough aesthetically. Never been garaged, so it needs paint, weatherstripping, etc. Also, with 133k on the clock, it's no spring chicken. However, let's get to the issue at hand. I had NO idea about this damned 3rd gear issue. I guess I should've done more research, so shame on me... But now I have to figure this out. I took the TSB to Honda. Of course, it's out of warranty, so here comes the quote. 1800. 1800! 1800?! Can't I replace the tranny for that? Do I just drive it until it dies? Is there a way to shame the dealer into fixing it? I can't sell it knowing that it has this issue; karma will kill me!

tl;dr: 3rd gear tsb not done under warranty. Now what...?

P.S. Yes, I've read the damned sticky...

You can find a used 08+ Si tranny where the issue was resolved from factory.

Which is probably your best option... if not just call Honda USA and bitch it out with them lol.

Ya, I tried whining to Honda, but they didn't care. Will any 08+ si tranny work?

Yup an 08+ Si tranny will work and that issue was fixed from factory so you won't have it unless the previous owner grinded 3rd gear for fun lol

Gather parts.

Remove your trans.

Install parts...or have a shop install parts....this can be done in a day.

Reinstall trans.

You're doing most of those steps for a 08 trans anyway. Hopefully when you sell your 07 trans, you'll let the person know that its grinding.

Thanks for the info guys. Why would I tell them 3rd gear is grinding? How would I sell it then? Of course I would let them know! I'm not Richard Nixon... Besides, I may try and replace the third gear set myself if the car is running, and keep that as a spare trans or sell it at that point. I've never been inside a tranny(auto or otherwise)...

If you plan on replacing it yourself I would be careful doing it certainly that this would be your first time looking into one!

When is the last time the transmission fluid was changed? If it wasn't done recently I'd start there before getting another transmission.

Transmission fluid will just mask the issue for a little and then it will come back.

If it wasn't fixed from the beginning like it should of then it will be an issue at all times.
