what oil to use for 09 si sedan
Hi, I just got a used 09 FA5. i've researched on what oil to use on my first oil and filter change and havent found anything clear cut. what weight do i use? i've been using mobil 1 extended performance on my 01 tl, and mobil 1 high mileage on my 00 ex. I dont know if the k20z3 require different oil. The car currently has 58k miles. Any positive feedback would be great. I live in the sacramento, ca area if that helps with anything.
It really all depends on a lot of factors from how you drive to $$$.
I use 5w40 Amsoil Full Synthetic cause I drive the car a little harder then most and track it often.
If you are doing regular driving with a few spirited runs you could use what is recommended from Honda which is 5w30. It's up to you if you want to use Synthetic or not.
Personally, I prefer Synthetic for the extra protection.

I've had friends tell me to use Castro Edge full syn. but i've never touched anything besides mobil 1 and royal purple (also heard royal purple is not good in the long run because it is too concentrated? from what I heard)
I've never used anything besides OEM tranny fluid and have had good results. As for oil, I use Castrol GTX oil with a K&N filter, which I've been using for years on multiple cars. I think that as long as you're going by the recommended oil change interval, you really can't go wrong with oil.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm going to go with what I've always been using. Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w-30 with a Mobil 1 filter. And I'm I will go with Amsoil manual transmission with synchromesh fluid. Anyone know if the tranny fluid is ok to use with these trannys?

ok guys. I decided to go with Castrol Edge 5w30. Mobil 1 filter. Amsoil synchromesh mtf. Just a question but is the amsoil good to use with this tranny since it has lsd? i've researched it and couldnt find a definitive answer. On the back of the bottle it said replaces honda mtf, but dont know if it is the same or better than hondas new mtf formula.

I'm sure I won't change anyone's mind...but yall pay too much attention to your brand of oil without any specific questions about usage.
-Has a brand of oil ever been attributed directly to chronic engine failure?
Nope. The only thing I can think of is Mobil1 being LOOSELY related to S2000 TCT noise/failure.
-Has a specific engine oil been directly attributed to making engines last 900,000,000,000 miles?
Nope. And even if it did....are you keeping the car that long?
The first argument that anyone replies with is all the "extra protection" a certain oil provides. Against what? Your commute isn't special. Cars were designed with the understanding that they'd be ragged on and beat up.
There's huge numbers of 200, 300, 400k+++ mile cars that got their oil changed at Jiffy Lube with some bulk barrel mystery oil.
If the argument is "It doesn't matter, I'd rather just spend the money to be safe"....then...why ask which specific oil you should use? If it doesn't matter, just buy the most expensive one.
That being said. FWIW:
I use Pennzoil Platinum in my TSX...and any of my GF's daily driven cars that she's owned. Idk...theres a million of them.
I use it because platinum 5W30 usually gets some of the best UOA results from K series engines and I use a 8k mile or longer oil change schedule. When I'm ready to sell my mechanically flawless TSX at 200k miles, someone else will get at least another 150-200k miles out of the engine.
I've used Castrol GTX and syntec in my S2000 and ITR. Both of which were/are tracked heavily. I even did a 3 day track event with like...2k mile old GTX, went home from the track to get my (rolling) papers, and then drove to CA. Mid summer. Oil was fine when I changed it.
I use Castrol or Valvoline 10W30 synthetic now....with an oil cooler so that the power stays more consistent on the track.
Like I said. Yall worry.

You are right brand doesn't make much of a difference! Although, they do have minor differences between them oil is oil lol... I used Motul for all my cars until last summer when I switched to Amsoil. Reason I switched to Amsoil was because it's what my friend uses at his shop so it's convenient for me.
I will say I prefer using synthetic over normal dyno oil. Also using the correct weight is much more important then the brand!

Weights/brands/types of oil should all be determined based on usage. That is to say, if one is asking the question "which oil should I use?", it should be a question followed up with some sort of specialized end use info. Like "I live in the arctic. What oil do I use in my Si that will be ok for 8k mile intervals with track time mixed in?"
Otherwise....it says 5W30 on the cap. Pick a 5W30 oil.

Agreed
I like the cheapest full synthetic I can find. Usually thats walmart supertech 5w-30, $18 for a 5 quart jug, with a honda factory filter. Ive been using fram ultra filters on my 2012 honda fit, 8-10k oil change interval (0w-20 however, usually Penzoil platinum as Supertech doesnt make a 0w) and that thing runs perfect at close to 100k
