Default Help with 1992 Civic Transmission?

My teen daughter has a VERY used up Honda Civic. Today when showing her where to check various fluids, etc, I couldn't find a dipstick for the automatic transmission.

However, I DID find an open hole in the transaxle. That some tranny fluid had slopped out of. Not good.

My first thought was, "Oh crap. The dipstick tube itself is missing!" It looks like a tube would just press fit in there.

However, the guy at AutoZone looked at it and said that many Hondas don't have a dipstick at all. He thought something else should be attached there, but couldn't say what.

For now, I bought a rubber plug to fill the hole. If you look at the attached photo, you can see the plug nice and snug in the hole.

So, my questions are... what is SUPPOSED to be in that hole? And is it really true that Hondas don't have dipsticks to where you could check the tranny fluid yourself?

Thanks in advance for your help. I know nothing about Hondas whatsoever, as is obvious by this thread....

CRAP. FORUM ISN'T LETTING ME INSERT THE PHOTO. IF YOU CAN HELP, PLEASE EMAIL ME AT LKOTAN@YAHOO.COM AND I'LL SEND THE PHOTO.

Thanks again!

A dipstick goes in the hole.

As I thought.... Thanks much, Ron. Any idea where to find one? Both O'Reilly and AutoZone didn't even have the ability to order one. Do I just have to hit junk yards? Or pay out the wazoo at a Honda dealership?

Enter VIN at Majestic Honda website. Go to AT CONTROL LEVER section to get part number and price (~$25). Use part number to compare prices at other parts sites. In addition, some local Honda dealers will match online discount prices, so phone local dealers as well.
