Transmission and brake problem
Long time viewer first time poster. So heres my problem. I have a 00 honda accord couple and basically the brake lamp warning light stays on. And on top of that the transmission does not engage in park. Meaning that if i park my car and dont use my parking brake the car will roll while its in the park gear. and on top of that my PRNDL will shift to any gear with out even pressing the brake. PLEASE HELP!!!! SOMEONE!!! ANYONE!!!!
Alittle more info on the car. All the tail lights work. And the brake solenoid under the dash moves freely in and out. I swapped out the tail light sensor and that has not fixed the problem either. Im really stumped.
A previous Accord I had, had the same issue with the brake warning lamp. I wasn't able to fix the problem completely but usually the problem is caused by corroded bulb sockets in the taillights.
There's a shift interlock that is supposed to lock the gear selector when the brake is pressed, sounds like its broken or not working.

I'd make a quick visual inspection of the shifter, cable, and where it hooks to the transmission selector on the transmission. make sure that when its in park, that the lever on the transmission actually is in 'park'. also does the car respond appropriately when other gears are selected? IE does the car go into reverse when you move the shifter to R?
Yes the car functions perfectly fine. IE The reverse lines up perfectly on the prindle. And the brake lights all work. Every single one including the 3rd high stop light.

also, take a look at where the cable connects to the transmission..make sure that when its in park, that the transmission lever on the transmission is actually all the way forward in park.. also, isnt there a a shift unlock next to the shifter?... hmmmm maybe try cycling it to make sure its not jammed, or on..
Ok so I cleaned the terminals and in the process of doing that one of the bulbs died. Stores closed so Ill have to pick one up tomorrow.
Now about the PRNDL. I took off the plastic cover and the links and everything look ok. And to your point !!!!!slipped wrench!!!!!! the shift lock release is not engaged. But I did notice one thing and that is that on the PRNDL illumination on the cluster the park P does not illuminate when I pull it toward reverse(but I'm still in the park gear). And when when I push it 1/8 forward it does illuminate(still in park). So basically jiggling it back and forth in park turns the cluster park light on and off.
Gosh this is a real stumper. I really appreciate and would love to hear anyone's thoughts on this.

Either way, the car should not rely on the parking pawl as a means to keep the car from moving while parked, that is the purpose of the parking brake. If the parking brake is not working, fix that as well.
Check that your shifter cable is properly adjusted. If the cable is not, the shifter may be in PARK allowing proper control of the interlock system, but the cable may not be allow the pawl to engage the parking gear.

Thanks for your input everyone. I got good news and bad news. Good news is the brake lamp warning light went away. I cleaned the sockets and connectors with wire brush and electrical connecter cleaner tho i didnt see any corrosion. And that seemed to be the fix for it.
Now the bad. I broke the shift lever rod trying to adjust it. The adjusting nut was rusted on there pretty good probably from spilled liquid from cup holder. Any way whats my fix for this? pick n pull yard? Is it an easy swap out? Any tips?

You will need to purchase the complete lower select lever assembly. You do not need the upper handle or bezel, but you will need the lever itself. Honda sells it for ~$100, most likely cheaper at the junkyard.
Hy everyone!
I have a "brake lamp check" problem on my CC1 Accord as well. BUT! it came up just after i removed the tow hitch and all of its wireing. every wire is connected to the correct colour so it can not be the problem. Lights are working, bulbs are perfect, connectors, too.
After i start the engine, press the pedal, it shows off but it came up at the next braking.
please help me with this because it is really annoying...
and sorry for my english, i am writing from Hungary, Europe
best wishes
Tom

Glad that fixed your problem Tom. The first time the light came on for me I looked at all the sockets and non of them were corroded so I didn't think that was the problem. But in fact that was the problem.
