Rebuild or replace engine? '99 LX
'99 LX, manual transmission, I4, ~ 163,000 miles, original clutch. I am the only owner of this car (bought it new in Oct. '98).
Long story short, it is burning oil. I lost a lot of oil a couple of years ago after a timing belt change and the damage is done. It burns maybe a quart every 1,500 miles. There is not a cloud behind me but it's not good and I have no catalytic converter either since the burning oil destroyed it. My mechanic says I need to have the engine rebuilt but he can't find anybody who still rebuilds engines (I live near Springfield, Illinois). I have just bought a new car for myself (a '12 Ford Focus SE hatchback, 5-speed, got a really good price on it and couldn't pass it up) but was wanting to fix up the Accord for my 17 year old son.
Is there some place I can drive to, maybe in the St. Louis area, that can take the car in for a week or so and rebuild the engine and slap on a new clutch system? Or if I were to buy a used engine how would I tell if it is any good or not? What is the approximate price for a rebuild, or a used engine (with labor)?
So my options are to sell the car as-is, I could probably get $1,000 or $1,200 out of it as-is and buy something else, or to fix the engine (replace with a used, or rebuild), and replace the exhaust ($450), and replace the clutch (~ $300 if the engine is out?). I would like to fix it if the price is reasonable and give it to my son - better to deal with the devil you know than the devil you don't know. Talking about the car, not my son.
Thoughts?

Locate a Japanese engine importer, should be able to find one that has an F23A engine. But verify which F23 your car has, there was an F23A1, F23A4, and an F23A5. Cost will probably be around 600 shipped.
Labor costs depend on who and where you bring it.
As for the clutch, depends on how easy you are on it. If there is still plenty of material on the disc, just leave it. If it is his first time driving stick, best to let him learn on the old clutch and burn it up rather than damage a new one.
