Default EM1 exhaust problem

I have a 1999 Civic Si with an aftermarket exhaust of an unknown brand (previous owner installed it). The day I bought the car and brought it home, there was a dark grey metallic fiber hanging out of the exhaust pipe that kinda resembled hair. I pulled some out then took a long stick and pushed the excess back into the muffler. The car was a little bit louder, but I experienced no driveability issues and didn't have the problem again. Recently (9 or so months later) I noticed when I rev the car high enough to engage VTEC, after my drive there's a tiny bit of this hair stuff sticking to my bumper. Any ideas what this could be and how to go about fixing it?

FTFY.

The fiberglass/metallic muffler packing is falling out. More than likely if there are no distinguishing markings of a manufacturer its cheap Chinese junk...which never lasts like people think it will. Poor craftsmanship is allowing it to fall apart.

Yeah the previous owner said the stock exhaust was trashed. Not sure what the deal is with this one. Is there a possible way to fix this or would you recommend a new exhaust?

Is the muffler section of the exhaust system and "axle-back" portion? If so you can get away w/ just getting an axle-back to match up to it. It will save you some $$$ and you should be able to buy a quality muffler that will last/sound decent.

Or get an axle back made. Your call.

The muffler section is just axle back but the exhaust system is a cat back.

The part loosing it's guts is just the muffler though. All you have to replace is the axle back to be rid of the fibrous material spitting out your tailpipe.
