Icon2 Civic is randomly cutting off

I have a 95 civic dx d15b. The car is randomly shutting off on me while driving. I got stranded yesterday . I was driving and all of a sudden it would just shut off. When i go to crank it it hesitates like the fuel pump is not coming on but then will eventually comes back on. Then i drive to drive and cuts right back off. So i tired to get it home from town because towing price is outrages. I cut the car on and tapped on the main relay and it started clicking and i was able to drive all the way home with out any stalling. I know which probably seems crazy . Any idea what i should look for i suspected a fuel issue but i was wrong when i decided to throw a fuel pump in and did the same issue. Reason i thought it was that because i had ran the tank low and filled it up

I'm sorry I'm not an expert (and I'm sure that some will show up soon in here), but from my poor knowledge, I can say that what a car needs to keep the engine running are basically a few things... Electricity to generate fire, fuel and oxygen to create the combustion... if you already checked the fuel line and pump, I'd suggest you to check the distributor (since if the problem was related to one single spark plug or wire, the car would present malfunction but not completely shut off of a sudden).

I hope this helps...

If you have a spare distributor you can lend from a friend's car and replace yours for one ride, that'd be the easiest way to test it.

In the other hand, you won't be able to make sure that this is the cause, but a good start point it is to remove the spark wires from the distributor (you don't need to remove the spark plug side for this test, but make sure you remove it once at a time and return them in the exact same plug spots) and see if there's too much rusty, and maybe rub the metal contacts to see it this helps.

As I said, I'm sorry I'm not a especialist, but that's what I'd definitely do if the same happens to my car.
