do I need to change piston rings?
Ok I rebuilt my d16z6 about 10k mi or little less, the pistons were new forged 10.5 compression and now i threw a rod bearing and i tore it apart and took it to the machine shop and they reccomended that I rehone it again and get new piston rings, among all the other things and said that everytime u tear a motor apart they recomend it, well i was just wondering if thats really necessary or not unless there is something wrong with the bore or ?? Any help appreciated, i am trying to cut costs or depending may just cancel fixing it, which would suck beacause of already putting new pistons rods redid the head etc but i may just cut my losses before i get too deep
yes, you need to re hone it. just a quick hit with a fine grit to rough them up again then some new rings. i believe its commonly referred to as deglazing the cylinder walls.
Yes to the new rings to at least the piston that lost the bearing- besides just being good practice when your that deep in the motor because of the slight wiggle from the bearing it can cause damage/deformation to the rings which in turn could lead to bad compression and blow by gasses/oil burning, doing all 4 is just good insurance. at least that's what i've been told by professional engine builders.
