Can you put a shorter belt on an Accord V6 to bypass the compressor? If so, what size?

Long version: My son has a 98 accord V6 (J30A1). The AC compressor is making a grinding noise with the AC on or off. I figure that either the bearing is bad or it's trashed internally. The car is about 40 miles away from me and I can't get a look at it for a few days. Can the compressor be bypassed with a shorter belt? Does the compressor have to be removed? I saw a good write up of it for the I4, but nothing for the V6.

Thanks

Yes you can just measure it out and head to the parts store and try out different alternator belts til you find one that works.
