Default How To:Lower Ball Joint

Hello i'm rather new here but i thought i'd give a how to a try.

I'll try and show you how to replace your lower ball joint the pictures were taken with a terrible phone so i hope i can explain everything easily and clearly but if you have any questions please ask below. I'll be working on Rex my 91 Crx Si

First is the tool list i used a
32 socket
19 socket
17 socket
14 socket
12 socket
10 socket
some extensions will help
hammer
breaker bar
needle nose pliers or C clip pliers
ratchets
ball joint fork
15'' piece of 2x4 wood
other small 2x4 piece
hydraulic press
car jack
and a jack stand or cinder block with a piece of wood in my case
and a Phillips screwdriver

First you will need to break the 32mm nut that holds your cv shaft in place i like to have someone inside of the car and press the brake when i do this Also i recommend pulling the E-brake as well during this time you might also want to loosen the lug nuts on your wheel

After that jack up the side of your car and use your jack stand or whatever you have to hold it up safety is important after that you can remove your lugs and get the ball rolling

So after you remove the wheel you will see something like this (note i did this pretty early in the morning so my axle nut is still on don't be like me make sure you remove it when the car is still on the ground makes things a lot easier)

i believe there are a total of 9 bolts that you need to remove
4 10's top of the upper arm and front bumper side
2 12's on the shock or strut
1 14 brake caliper like changing your brakes
2 19's holds the caliper to the rotor

after you remove all of those you will be left with just 3 bolts to remove all 17's they are right here

After you remove those three castle nuts its time to unsieze the ball joints from their home (side note the fork can be a wonderful thing but if you're not careful you can rip good boots such as mine on my skunk2 upper control arm and yes it does suck)

after you get done with that grab your hammer and tap on the end of the drive shaft until it starts to wiggle free

after you wiggle the drive shaft out the unit should pop right off

after that remove the two screws that are holding your rotor on the unit i like to gentle give the screws a tap with a hammer while holding the bit in the screw

After removing your rotor you need to undo your c clip that holds the ball joint in place this si where your needle nose pliers or c clip pliers come in handy

after you removed that i like to get a less useful harbor freight socket that will fit over the shaft of the ball joint to give me a flat surface in which to apply pressure on the press

after the old ball joint comes out now you need to lube up your new ball joint to ease the install of it into your missing slot i also like to remove the boot so that it doesn't rip when you are installing it back into the unit.

to get the new one in i just used a hammer and got a stick and hit it on the sides of the new ball joint avoiding a hit to the center of it until it sank into place

reinstall or boot and c clip and bolt it back on if you have issues with your 17's moving or spinning when reinstalling get the jack and place it under your lower control are and use the wood pieces to limit the amount of area the unit can move your attempting to bind the area so that it has some force pressing against it to stop (hopefully) the joint from spinning

And well you should be done after installing your new ball joint attach everything back up and enjoy
