Default software update

I had my 2006 civic check engine light diagnosed by my local oil change shop for $80. Y hey said they checked all they could but to resolve the issue it needed a pdm software update regarding the cooling system. Does thus sound right and if so do honda dealerships charge for updates that are needed? Thanks

Why would you not have called a Honda dealership to pose this question rather than posting it here?

What code are you throwing?

80$ that is crazy... doesn't Napa or Autozone scan the check engine light for free?

Like grumblemarc asked what code is it?

you got ripped off big time, almost every auto parts place around does free code reading now, Should have gotten the codes and posted them here sounds like this shop is full of it

Well I posted here because it was Saturday after hours and dealership service shops are closed on Sundays too. Was trying to get an idea if the software updates are a normal procedure and necessary since the car runs fine. Also, trying to get an idea if there is a charge for financial reasons. Personally, I've never heard of such a thing. My local shop always runs my codes for free. On only a couple of occasions have I had to pay because it takes a lot of time to get to the real cause of the code. I have setup an appointment for Tuesday to get it done.

for what you paid to get a code read, you could have bought your own basic OBD2 code scanner, this shop sounds like rip off I would stay away from there, if a code needed to be "updated" on your car, that sounds like something that would be a factory recall

The software has probably already been done... it's an 06 I highly dough that car was never brought to the dealer under warranty! Also that update was back from 07 or around that time so the car would still be under warranty.

But again what is the code you are getting?

If it was one of those "diagnostic checks" that they run, it wouldn't have been free, even though they do they same thing.

So, are you or are you not throwing a code that you are under the belief that something is wrong with the cooling system?
