Hi I'm just looking for people opinions. I just bought a 98 ex. Its my first one that is an automatic, 4 door, and ABS. When I back down my driveway every morning, after about 40 feet I get a rubbing sound in the front end that only lasts for about one second. Its very consistent though, it happens every day, at the same spot more or less. I don't have anything loose in the front end. I'm almost thinking it my have something to do with ABS since I have never experienced it before, and I've never had ABS before. I guess it could be tranny related? Other then that I have no idea. theres nothing rubbing. Anyone have any advice?

 

Surface rust on rotors most likely. Especially if it goes away after a moment

 

Yep, all of mine do this. Is it worse after a rainy night?

Quick test, look at rotors before driving, you will see the surface rust. Drive car for a mile, come back and they should be clean and sound will be gone. Well at least until the next day.

 

No its more of a drivetrain noise. its a rubbing/faint grinding/clicking. definitely not rotors. Ive noticed it happens wether i'm going forward or reverse, after I start my car. It doesn't have to be a cold start, it happens ever when warm. .and when I say consistent, I mean it happens after the wheels turn 7 times( for example. didn't actually count how many times, but its the exact same every time.)

It sounds like its coming from the front passenger wheel. though it also could be the automatic transmission, or CV shaft area...you can feel the vibration in the floor. And the sound only last for a second. It really sounds like ABS related, almost the same sound you would hear when you lock up all the tires during a skid. I've never had ABS before, maybe its something activating and completely normal? Its gotta be either the transmission, ABS, or CV. would any of this make sense? I m very unfamiliar and I thank you for any help.

 

Doubt it's abs but you can easily eliminate that by removing the fuse for abs and seeing if it continues.

Make sure there are no loose bolts nuts etc no rocks stuck between rotor and dust Shields make sure Shields aren't rubbing

 

Ok, that sounds good, i'll pull the fuse and see what happens.

Also I have a whirring sound when I go above 40, coming from the same location. I think it might be related. thought it was a tire, but I put a known good tire on and the sound didn't go way. It sounds like a shot wheel bearing but the wheel bearing is tight. just passed inspection too.

I hope its not the transmission....The tranny seems to shift extremely smooth. the car has 160,000.

 

Could be a bearing whirring but doubt the bearing is clicking.

Check the obvious first, then axle would be a suggestion

 

Sound clip of the noise? Any vibrations?
