Default Heater core by-pass

Ok, so I think my heater core has a slow leak because I can smell coolant in the interior when the heater is on and I get a thin film on the inside of the windshield. I am not getting any sign of coolant leaking onto the carpet or around where the heater core is located under/behind the dash. Should I bypass the heater core? If yes, how do I get the hoses off of the firewall, it looks like there is hardly any room to get to them. Or could it be an different issue? Any help would be appreciated.
