Default 2 questions: Wipers & Oil leak

1989 Honda civic LX sedan All stock

Question 1:
For my wipers, when I turn it on to the first setting, the wipers will go up 2-3 inches and stop there. If I go to the next setting up its fine, then the last setting its fine as well. Any one ever had this issue? Wiper motor most likely? and if so, how hard is that to replace?

Question 2:
I got light smoke coming from behind the header heat shield area, looks like a oil leak dripping onto something making that smell. Anyone have this issue? and if, so can narrow it down as to what I might need to replace.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I think it the wiper switch unit, mine doesn't work on the first setting either (intermittent setting), it used to, and one day give out..

Smoke from the front side most likely leak from valve cover seeping down the header.

I agree with droopy on the oil leak. Most likely the valve cover gasket. I would also suggest replacing the PCV(Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve while your at it, as it is most likely the cause.

finally got around to replacing the valave cover gasket. Still that leak, looks like it's coming from the front of the oil pan area. Odd that smoke comes from the header area though. I'll work on that PVC next week.

thanks

I don't know where your oil leak is coming from, but take my advice in one thing: always use OEM Honda gaskets. I can't tell you how much wasted time, money, and effort I put into getting my valve cover leak fixed because I was using aftermarket gaskets. As soon as I installed OEM, problem solved.

It might be the distributor o-ring that's causing the leak.

Default Wipers mist setting?

Do your wipers work in the mist setting IE pull it down and let go once they move up a bit. If this works then I'd say its the switch but more than likely if the intermittent doesn't work then the mist won't either which means something specific is wrong inside the wiper motor. The return rail of the motor or something like that.

Intermittent wipers are timed and switched by the ICU. Its a grey box behind your fusebox. They burn up often and cause problems with intermittent wipers, rear defrost, blinkers, and seatbelts. I bet you guys have burnt components in your ICU. Remove it from the fusebox, and open it up and look for burnt components. If the wipers work fine in other settings the switch and motor are fine.
