Icon6 Head lights electrical problem

Hello
I currently have an electrical issue on my 2003 Civic DX Sedan 1.7L 5 Speeds

Here are the symptoms:

DRL working when head light switch is OFF;
High beam lights working when I turn the switch ON (driver and pass);
Low beam lights NOT WORKING (pass and driver) when ditch is ON;
Basically when I turn the head light switch ON the DRL SHUTS OFF, and the low beam light does not work?!?!
Anyone having any ideals why this happens?! Could it be a switch issue? Could it be a ground issue?

Any leads would be great help!

Thanks
Jean

2001-2003 uses the same bulb for both hi and low beam at each respective side. 2004-2005 uses separate bulbs for hi and low at each respective side.

Issue can possibly be:
• Combo light switch (more specifically the dimmer switch that is part of the light switch assembly)
• Low Beam Cut Relay
• Wiring
• Bulbs

For the low beams to be activated, the ground has to be supplied through (1)the dimmer switch, then (2) low beam cut relay, and then to (3) the bulbs.

Do you have a multi-meter to test?

Hello Thanks for the reply.
Yes I have a multi-volts tester.
Can you guide me with the test?

Thanks again

Let's try something different first without the multimeter.

1. Locate the low beam cut relay under the dash.

2. Pull out the low cut relay (#2 in image).

3. Attach a wire from the cavity terminal #4 (Red/Yel wire) to cavity terminal #1 (Red/Wht wire).

Turn on the low beam headlight switch. Does it work now?

Don't replace anything yet. We're trying to narrow down the area of the cause and may have to do more testing afterward.

Hello My friend

No I won't replace anything.
Can you help me locate the relay under the dash?
IT is on the left side of the steering Colunm... Correct?

I am still at work now. I will look at this later this afternoon.

Alain thank for your help.

It should be connected to #9 in this dashboard wire harness diagram.

There was a recall on the light stalk. It was the same issues I had. You may fall into that.

Hello

I am sorry for the late response. Just got back from work.

Okay I tried to put the wire into the low beam cut relay cavity number 1 to the no.4 cavity and it did not do anything and the lights are still doing the same thing low being nothing and high beam works well so really I don't I really don't know what's going on . There were two relay one black and one gray. Is there a place to upload a picture?

Please advise any other trick you may have.
Regards

There may be a trial period for new forum users before they can upload images. But, if you use some other site like photobucket, dropbox, etc. you can load the image there and link it here.

If connecting a wire between the No. 1 and 4 cavities where the low beam cut relay was and it didn't turn on when you switch the light switch on, then it may be an issue with either the combination light switch (e.g, the stalk) and/or the Red/Yel wire that runs between the light switch and the low beam cut relay.

Try this, connect a wire from cavity terminal #1 (Red/Wht wire) to body ground (such as a metal bracket, etc. on the car). You'll probably need a longer wire. Turn on the headlight switch, does it light up? It should.

In the U.S., there was a recall for the 2001 -2002 Civics (the recall was later extended and 2003 Civics were added); where the combination light switch and a wire (Red/Wht wire for U.S. models) was replaced. Attached is the service bulletin.

On Canada models, the wiring is a little different than U.S models; so, it is a Red/Yel wire at that location in the service bulletin where the Red/Wht wire on U.S. model is. I don't know if Honda Canada had a similar safety recall.

There's no trial period for uploading images. We've got a nice DIY listed in the FAQ's thread, on how to upload images.

Hello Again...

following this inconclusive test of connecting cavity 1 and 4. I think I will try once more but with a bigger wire. I suspect that the first time wire I used may have been a bit too small.

Then, I will also look and connecting terminal 1 to metal.

So please stand by I will provide the results.

Unfortunately I will not be able to work on the car before Thursday evening. I will reply my results then.

Also here a dropbox link of the picture I wanted to share with you.

let me know if you can see the image.

Once again, thanks for everything.

I can see the dropbox image. A little hard to see the plastic tabs as a reference; but, the orientation of the tabs looks correct. You may want to verify the wire colors in the back of the relays to make sure.

Hello again

Well I found the problem !!!!??? I am very happy about it. Now my low beam are working.

After working as per you instructions of previous replies, I was still unsuccessful in solving the issue. However I learned a great deal about the electrical diagram of the low beam. Thank you for that!!

Anyway after that I went to the actual lights in front. I noticed that the connector on the Driver side was completely broken and the top prong was stinking out and was not connected. Not to mentioned that the other connection were very rusted. So I cleaned all three prongs and put a bit of grease for electrical connections as well as doing the same on the passenger side ( also cleaned the 3 prongs and put grease)

And all lights are working fine!

So it was a bad connection at the bulbs?!!

Thanks for the great help,

Until next time, Regards

Jean

You're welcome. Glad you found the issue.

I was monitoring this thread closely as it not safe or legal without working low beams.
