Default What (sensor) is this next to the oil dipstick?

This is my 3rd J35 V6 car. Always meaning to ask, what is this next to the oil dipstick? It seems like everytime I check the oil, I touch it. And the way the wire bends, and exposed, it does not look all that hardy.

Granted whatever this is has never failed me, but just seem like an odd location, either for the sensor, or the oil dipstick.
