Low compression
I have a '94 Del Sol (regular S, automatic) that I had towed to a mechanic. I asked him if he did a leak down test and he said he couldn't because it's not holding any compression to do the test...sounds like this isn't true?
He also said it will run me about $5k to get the engine replaced...I've owned this car for 14 years and I really don't want to let it go

That is a SHADY mechanic. Taking advantage of the fact you don't know any better.
It will cost no where near $5000 to replace that engine.
Yeah, I had it towed back home. One of my other friends that used to own a del sol said I could replace it much cheaper than that...just need to find someone in south florida that can do it!!
