Default 94 hatchie dx - gas leak :(

a lot going on with this little car - and now when i fill it full i smell gas. 5 gallons, no smell. I drove around a lot to get it down when i first found the leak (after just filling up!) i wish i had looked a bit harder at where it was leaking from but it appeared to be on the left hand side rear was where gas was dripping from and visibly wet. memory fading as i type... wondered if it was filler tube where it meets tank? looks to be a little rusty around there i think. how/where to start??

Car information is required - always.

We'll for starters jack it up and get down there, find exactly where the leak is coming from. Then report back. Most likely it's your fuel tank.

94 hatchie dx - will try to look around today when it warms up a bit - are there common places to check: filler tube meets tank, seams? leaking when more than half full makes me think it either semi-plugged itself, the weight of the gas pushed it through a small hole or it is on the top half of the tank...

if it only leaks when full - i am guessing i need to fill it up again first or i won't see if if i jack it up and crawl under now - true? i should have done this when i 1st noticed the leak...

so my plan is to wait until a dry-ish day when I need to drive a god distance and then fill it up AND crawl underneath and try to figure out where the leak is coming from...sound good?

Has this vehicle ever had an audio system/subwoofer installed?

I've run into this same issue when a previous owner inadvertently put a screw through the top of the fuel tank when he bolted down his subwoofer. The tank had to be dropped and patched.

No more fuel smell after that.
