Default 97 dx hatch needs shifter bushings or short shifter?

I just picked up a 5 speed 97 dx hatchback for my fiance's younger brother. We are going to work on and fix up now that he's got his license. Its going to need shifter bushings before he can drive it. I even had a hard time trying to find gears driving it through town when I test drove it. I'm just wondering if it would be best to just install the bushings to fix the slop or if this would be the appropriate time to install a short shifter instead since its something he will probably be interested in down the road anyhow.

Short shifters are, generally speaking, a waste of money. They're especially a waste for a new driver, who is going to abuse it and probably end up ******* up the transmission because of it. Get some poly bushings and call it a day. Wait until he's learned how to drive properly before you worry about any "upgrades".
