so I just changed my manual transmission fluid. last time it was changed was with motor swap about 3 years ago. the fluid was green. any idea what that stuff was? replaced with Honda mtf.

Any transmission problems? Did somebody possibly add a dye? Any debris found in the fluid, like metal shavings?

 

sorry sir. was just wanting to know if any of you guys have ran across green manual transmission fluid.

I doubt it was dye added to the tranny. didn't check for metal shavings, however I had throw-out bearing noise and issues shifting from 2nd to 3rd. aswell as difficulty shifting from 4th to 3rd.

its a 94 Honda civic. d15b engine. and like I said the shop put green fluid in and just wondering if I should be angry seeing how I've read the wrong mtf can cause bearing wear... example. throw out bearing noise..

Was it like grass green or green tint?

I had a Trans with gear oil in it that came out with a green tint to it. I could smell that it was gear oil. Of course our Trans take engine oil or Honda mtf

 

You never stated this^ until now.

It was anybody's guess why the fluid was green.

 

Hypoid gear oils often have a green tint. Maybe some fool put in gear oil. Fools be doin that. I'm surprised it stayed green for 3 years, though. 3 years ago, the Honda MTF available had a pink tint. I *think* MTF1 used to have a green tint. I believe Castrol 0W30 (GC) had a green tint 3 years ago as well. It has a racing gear oil additive in it...so maybe some fruitcake put that in. Idk.

More importantly.....who cares?

Use Honda MTF or Torco MTF or non synthetic motor oil (if you don't mind some hard shifting during winter). I've been loving my Torco MTF. I got it on Amazon.

Ignore the colour.

Hypoid gear oil can cause hard shifting. But...your throw out bearing doesn't come in contact with trans fluid. It's dry since its in the clutch housing. You could use grape jelly in the trans. The throw out bearing would not know the difference (not just because throw out bearings have no taste buds).

I'm sure your bearings are fine. You're going to have a hard time holding a shop accountable for some 3 year old mystery fluid that's probably been disposed of already.

I'm sure if you switch to MTF, your shifting will get better.

 

yeah im still learning about this car.. I've owned it for 10 years but pretty much changed the oil. had shops do everything else.. gonna be kind of honest I don't understand why they would of recommended changing the clutch when they pulled the motor and replaced it. live and learn right. thanks for the imput and probably wont use this shop again or atleast not without putting my 2 cents in about their practices.

 

If you use Honda MTF or conventional 10w30 motor oil and you use the Moly manual transmission additive (black molybdenum additive), the draining color looks greenish, pukish kinda green.

 

In the extremely rare occasion that I take my car to a shop to install parts...I either bring my own parts or I specify exactly what parts to use.

Clutch jobs on MOST daily driven, close to stock Hondas: Exedy OE replacement clutch kit.

Honda MTF/Torco MTF (buy some bottles and bring it with).

Honda urea grease (more important than you think). Never let a shop pick the clutch grease. Its not like its easy to clean off and regrease if they use something asinine like anti-sieze.

Just some tips. Find out what you need/want. Bring it with or spec it out.

 

Because clutches are dirt cheap, the labor to get at them not so much. If you're replacing an engine there's essentially no extra labor involved in replacing the clutch so unless you know it's near new it makes sense to replace it.
