greetings fellow H-Ters, my aunt has a 02 accord se and its throwing CEL codes. i dont have them on hand but i will update later on tonight but i have to get this car running because she leaves to the phillipines next week. There is a plug on the head, i believe its a temp gauge sensor, but i cannot find a plug from the harness that goes to it. could anyone have some insight on what or where it might be? thank you in advanced.

98-99 Accord 4 cylinders had the temperature gauge sending unit for the temperature gauge.

00-02 Accord 4 cylinders no longer had a temperature gauge sending unit, as the engine coolant temperature signal came from the PCM/ECM to the temperature gauge. The PCM/ECM receives engine coolant temperature information from the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.

Not sure why someone installed a temperature gauge sending unit on that 02 Accord.

 

I was guessing its a swapped motor

 

If the plug was there, and you cant find it, could have gotten caught in the bell housing when installing the transmission and pinched it off.

Is the cylinder head original to the car?

 

Everything is original, I checked the bell housing of the trans, couldn't find it at all. The CEL codes are P1167, P1164, P0505. I've searched and the 505 is probably the idle air control valve . But those other 2 I'm thinking is that plug

 

As I previously posted, a 2002 Accord 4 cylinder is not suppose to have a temperature gauge sending unit. If everything is original for the 2002, there should be no harness plug connector for a temperature gauge sending unit. Does the temperature gauge work even though that is not plugged in? It should, as a 2002 Accord doesn't use that.

Even if it have a temperature gauge sending unit, if it was unplugged it would not give a trouble code.

P1167 is A/F Sensor (Sensor 1) Heater System Malfunction and P1164 is A/F Sensor (Sensor 1) Range/Performance Problem. They do not have anything to do with the temperature gauge. The Air Fuel Ratio sensor is located on the exhaust manifold (front of car).

 

The temp gauge does work, which made me wonder what it was, and by sensor on the exhaust manifold, are you referring to an Oxygen sensor? Cause I replaced both of them with denso. uLEV ones

 

P1167- A/F sensor 1 heater malfunction.
P1164- A/F sensor 1 malfunction
P0505- Idle Control system malfunction.

Check your wiring harness for damage, loose connections or corrosion.

That trans is probably not original either, factory did not use permanent marker to mark it 'PAX'.

I got the trans from a local place that sells engines. I bought a jdm gsr from them and a jdm b16 and they were fine. The only thing they mentioned was that it's from Japan so the sensors might be different, I only had to change out like 3 sensors though. Speed sensor and a 2 sensors in the rear
