Default Broken valve cover bolt

So I was replacing my valve seal and plug seals today. When I got everything going I started putting it back on and this bolt felt like it kept going and didn't seem to torque up at all. Finally after a few twists it felt like it may have just not been on straight or something idk. However, when I went to tighten the bolt the thread which is on the motor broke... inside of the bolt.. so now I have VERY little thread that will catch on a new bolt and tighten down just a tiny bit which isnt enough downforce to keep the oil inside..

So basically its spitting oil all over the manifold..

How do I fix this.. I feel like driving it off a cliff at this point.

Would be nice to know what belt you're talking about, what bolt you're working on, what engine, etc..etc...

That bolt right there. I was tightening it up and then it just snapped the threading that the bolt goes onto. It basically has like 5% thread left. So basically a new bolt with go on but I get a semi turn in and it wont turn any further since there is no threading.

You will need to re-tap it. Can you show an image of the threaded hole? And what belt are you referring to

This is exactly what snapped. The top part with the threading broke off into the bolt.

Are these things easily replaceable? If so what is the part so I can get one and fix my baby

I'd recommend that you look for a new bolt to that specific model and replace the current one, also you could take it to a real mechanic to have it looked at?

You need to take the valve cover back off and look at it. Hopefully you can re-tap it for the correct thread. If it's really messed up you might have to go a size up on that one. If you do just find a bolt at the hardware store the right length. Every valve cover gasket I've ever bought for a dseries came with the rubber grommets for the valve cover bolts. I'd get a set of those and you should be good.

Well, the big problem is there is literally no thread left on that piece. I can just barely fit a bolt onto it and barely turn it.

Its basically screwed as far as getting a bolt on there to get tight enough to keep the valve cover on tight, when I turned the car on the cover just rocks really hard from not having the pressure on that 1 bolt then proceeds to spit oil onto the manifold. Is that piece a bolted on piece that can just be replaced?

EDIT : As far as a tap goes thats not gonna work because its not a hole for a bolt rather a fixed piece of metal that looks like a pole that just sticks though the valve cover then you just put the tiny bolts back over the thread on the fixed bolts. Ill draw up a little diagram to show the issue

So this is the best I could draw it out in paint. Hopefully this helps.

Honda eStore

part 14 on the right side of the 2 diagrams. It looks like this but im not 100% on if that is correct because it doesn't show where it is going. My guess is thats my part, it also seems to bolt in on the bottom which is great news for me

These are also removeable. my integra has teh same setup here, I have a few of these messed up in my integra lol. You just have to use pliers to twist them out.

A gearwrench is a better choice to remove those...,

There is no belt thing, I may have typoed but no just this issue with the threaded stud. got the part located. Now to find a quick way to get it here. also need the new bolt to tighten on it since the threaded piece is wedged in there

Thanks all

They're easy to strip, they only take aprox. 5ft lbs and 6ft lbs will break em. I couldn't tell whatsoever how tight they were, until I realized I ruined the stud and the nut.

I turned em 1/4 turn every day until there were no more oil leaks, after replacing the stud and nut.

to do it right you either need finesse like a professional, or a torque measuring device.

I'm serious though. Either tighten them 1/4 turn a day until they stop leaking, or use a good torque wrench wrench. If you're not incredibly precise, you can strip them without noticing. I was using a 1/4 inch ratchet and I didnt notice when I broke them until I took a step back and though "oh **** me!!"

10ft lbs will strip it. I bet 8ft lbs would too

7 ft-lbs. like TomCat39 posted. It's not that difficult. There's no reason to "tighten them...until they stop leaking". Tighten them to 7 ft-lbs. and they won't strip, shear or leak.

eH.

You need a pretty good torque wrench for that, Mr. ehhhh. I'm simply providing my experience on it, incase someone needs to tighten them without a torque wrench
I just dont trust mine, its a bitch and I dont feel like getting it calibrated again It just got calibrated a few months ago.

I think its to screw with the mechanics in the dealerships back in the day. Or maybe its because Honda knows that you basically need to use theirs, and they can charge like $50 for $5 worth of bolts.. **** sucks dude total waste of money. Gotta just not strip em

they strip easy so you don't f the head up when you over torque them, I have had to replace them on b series engines, I always keep one of each type as a spare.
