I have a 2002 Accord SE 4DR 2.3L F23A4 4 speed automatic. How do I tell the exact model of my transmission? Or which other models will work?

 

M6HA is the family of transmission, but there are slight differences due to changes in torque converter stall and transmission gear ratios. B6VA/BAXA/MAXA/MDWA/MGRA are some, if not all, the codes that can be found on the case to identify which model of M6HA it is.
Vehicles using the M6HA are 6th Gen Accords, 5th Gen Preludes, 2nd Gen Odyssey, 98-99 CL.

Keep in mind the Prelude and Odyssey will have lower gear ratios that will affect MPGs, but will give the car better acceleration.

If it is a M6HA for a 2.3 it will work.
There may be a few differences such as;

Torque converter diameter, you will need to use the correct drive plate if you are removing the transmission yourself, make sure to take the drive plate(flywheel) as well.

JDM imported transmissions have been reported to have different connections on the sensors. If your old sensors are good reuse them, there may or may not be a difference between 98-00 and 01-02 sensors.

Biggest difference would be gear ratios. Accord will have the best for mileage, Ody/Prelude will have lower gearing for acceleration.

I've just picked up a 2002 PAX core to drop into my '98. I can swap over any stays, hangers or ATF pipes that may need swapped, but is the ECU going to need flashed to handle this later core?
Pretty sure my original is a PAX-010, while newer one should have been built to the PAX-A01 R/M level. -010 was '98~'99, while '00~'02 was -A01. I've only barely seen the R/M bill of materials for both, and I know the accum body, among other things, is different. I think the MVB and Reg Bodys are common. Pretty sure ratios are same.
Will know more about similarities/differences next week.

 

AFAIK '96-'02 Accords, although OBDII, are not flashable. They still use a chip like OBDI cars but it is not cheap to reprogram. With the transmission, I would not worry about changing anything. Shift points are made through a combination of speed and engine load. IMO you should be fine.
