Florida Man Sentenced in Federal Counterfeit Case
Marc Heera, 24 of Sunrise Florida was sentenced to Federal prison following his guilty plea for trafficking in counterfeit goods.
Let this be a lesson to those who think that intellectual property has no value. We will take whatever measures are necessary to protect ourselves and our customers.
In addition to the Federal criminal charges, Hondata is prosecuting Heera in California State Court and seeking very substantial civil damages.

He was found guilty. That's different than his sentencing phase where one is hauled away to federal prison. You can still walk out of the door for non-violent crime. He just reports to his probation office in the same building, goes home and prepares to serve his sentence.

Hondata,
I could care less about your troubles, as you could care less about mine. Why are you posting them here? You want to stir the pot? I'll chime in:
I wish you would have activated my Rom Editor 3 ages ago when I called you.
Instead, you told me the $600 I gave you was not sufficient, and you wanted me to spend another $150 on a proprietary USB to serial cable. This cable did nothing to help me, and only furthered your pursuit to "protect your intellectual property".
Hondata is a BS company that only cares about their bottom line. Don't let them fool you.
So, to you Hondata, I bet nobody cares! I sure as hell don't!!!

I mean, you did buy ancient technology, and obviously didn't do any research on it. They have modern products that work if you're not trying to cut corners.
They're posting here because it's relevant to this section of the forum. Hondata ultimately pioneered Honda rom editing, which is one of the reasons this forum exists in the first place.

I did lots of research on it at the time. It was pioneering and great and all that jazz. But that doesn't mean what they did was appropriate.
IMO it's like Win 8 to Win 8.1
I bought the system, it should be a free upgrade when it comes to a revision like that.
I don't see JR over at Neptune charging for new software versions either. People with old RTP boards are still going fine. Or Crome software. Or Fast systems.
Again, their cable did nothing for me. It was only for Hondata's protection of copyright. If they are/were so eager to eliminate piratable copies of their software, they would have obliged to swap it for free..
(Thanks for assuming I cut corners and I know nothing. To vouch for myself, I've been learning this stuff since 2002, and pretty proficient at it now.)

YBLEGAL,
What exactly did you pay $600 for ??? ROMEditor 3 never utilized the proprietary USB/Serial cable dongle... it is used for ROMEditor 4 only. That can be purchased by anyone for $195 and then you download the newest version of RE4 software off of the website. Your analogy comparing RE3 and RE4 software to be like Windows 8.0 to 8.1 is flawed. The proper comparison would be Windows 7 to 8.0. Microsoft didn't offer that jump for free... you have to pay for it. Both RE3 and RE4 received numerous revisions over the years and every single one of those was free.
The obvious difference between the RE3 and RE4 systems are simply that the Intellectual Property protection has moved from being software based to hardware based. Once Hondata made this change, the third party who received payment for the licensing is no longer utilized, and thus, the older software cannot by upgraded by Hondata. There is nothing wrong with Hondata protecting their investment and Intellectual Property... nor is there anything wrong with them making money doing it. This is a Capitalist system here in the US. You don't work for free... why should they ???
Lastly, your examples of other systems working forever without any upgrades that cost money is incorrect. The FAST system has changed dramatically over the years and has required both software upgrades and hardware upgrades that are NOT free. Speaking of free... CROMe is worth every penny that it costs... you cannot even compare that garbage to NEPTUNE, FAST, Hondata, AEM, etc. It is not even in the same league.
You missed the point of Hondata's original post. It is not to brag that they got the bad guy, although they deserve to do so. Getting to that point came at a great expense to them. It was because they care about making a quality product and did not want some hack tarnishing their good name by producing an inferior copy that creates a customer service nightmare and sullies the brand. They did what was necessary to protect the integrity of their product. Maybe that public knowledge will deter the next crook who considers the same path...

Not to thread jack here, but do you guys honestly agree that Crome is a better option for tuning than Hondata?
Lol sorry had to re-read and realize your sarcasm; it's late here. For a second I actually thought you were saying Crome is in a league of its own over Hondata, FAST etc and was in complete shock. I have now corrected myself.

You were scaring me for a second too Villian... I had to re-read my own post to make sure !!! To clarify, freeware systems like CROMe and Uberdata are substandard compared to Factory supported, developed systems like Hondata, NEPTUNE, AEM, FAST, Haltech, Motec, etc.
Better than nothing since it is free... but nothing compared to products that you have to pay for.
