Default 1999 Accord P0401

I have read a bunch of threads but being a new owner to a used accord with limited mechanical knowledge I decided to post anyway.

I want to clean the carbon build up out of this car.

I was going to clean the egr valave, that looks simple enough, but I'm not sure about the "ports" and drilling holes ,

I think a little sea form through the brake booster seems better for my limitations.

4 or 6 cyl car? I'll guess 6 since you speak of drilling. If you are not sure of drilling at least run a piece of wire, small round brush thru the port.

Seafoam...good luck, willing to bet you get nothing but a ton of smoke.

Its actually a 4 cyl 2.3L I guess I was watching the wrong video in regard to drilling.

So short of takeing the intake manifold off and cleaning it, theres not much I can do except taking off the EGR and cleanign that out?

It is running fine, has a lot of miles, 223K but tht is mostly highway, and the guy I bought it from was a "go to dealer for everything " guy.

Ok, yea the 4 cyl is another story.....which may or may not help.

Once the egr is off. One of the ports goes to the plenum.....the one towards the center of the car but double check me as I'm going on memory.

The rest of this is a reach as I've never done this on a 6th gen. With a can of seafoam spray, use that long *** tube that comes with it (I think that thing is like 18~24 inches long) to sanke the tube up the port to the intake....spraying as you go. You will be going "uphill" so this may or may not work as the "hard stuff" is going to be far away and up from where you are trying to get it.

And then you are going to have that "path" full of liquid. You'll have to find some way of getting it out of there before starting the car.

any chance that running a wire through instead of seafoam would be easier? I do not know how to get the liquid out prior to starting the car.

thanks for your help

A shop vac on "wet" would be best. an old "turkey baster" to suck it out would be my next choice....paper towels will take a long time.

The thing about just a wire....first it has to be strong and also flexible - going against each other - as you can see to "snake" the port from the valve you have to make some turns. Next, now you have "pieces" of carbon laying around in there - how are those coming out? The seafoam would brake down those pieces.

At the end of the day and it is your choice. If you don't want to pull the plenum and that to get to it....I'm just trying to give ideas which may or may not work or be the best way to go about it. Sometimes I get too creative for myself and cause more issues.

I think I will try the Seaform and use the shop vac to suck it out.

Ok tonight I took the EGR valve off and cleaned it, it was crazy how packed the carbon crap was. I also added a new gasket. I also took the throttle boady off and it was very very dirty. I cleaned that and put it back on.

I then ran 4 oz of Seafoam through the brake boostere vaccum hose, let sit for 10 minutes and blew it out.... it was an enormous amount of stinking smoke.

I then changed the plugs.....

I cleared the CEL so we will see. If this does not work I will take the manifold off and clean it...

The car has 223K but it runs and drives as good as my other sons 2002 accord with 123K

I have 2012 accord as well with 23k why do these cars last so long

I don't know if the seafoam helped but it seemed to help.

Ok, now I am getting a P1399 code. The car runs fine, but after cleaning the EGR I am getting the P1399 and the P0401 ... I did change the plugs.....

You gotta pull the intake plenum and clean the ports in the runners.

On the 98-02 2.3 the upper plenum needs to be removed to clear out the EGR to lower intake, and lower intake to upper plenum cover port.

No Seafoam will clear that out.

Start at post 20 and have at it.

Misfire will occur if EGR is not flowing, it is a lean misfire.
