Default Question about "Chipped" Computers

I have a 98 Honda Civic EX, 1.6 Sohc Vtec. My civic is used on a small circle oval track (not road driven or legal). List of upgrades: Converted from Auto to Stick with a s40 JDM transmission with Stage 2 Clutch, 7 pound flywheel. 4-2-1 header exhaust with a cherry bomb Glass pack. 70MM Throttle body, Bored to match Y8 intake manifold. NGK iridium plugs, Accel Cap and rotor, NTK wireset. The car never leaves 2nd gear, acceleration is the key to winning. NO internal engine or engine swap is permitted to change. I was looking into getting a chipped computer, to maybe help the vtec kick in earlier, increase fuel pressure maybe, or anything that would help. Any help on this would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Accel cap and rotor? There's a reason everyone worth listening to around here will say buy OEM - it's simply better.

What you're talking about, and how you're talking about it, would be a complete waste of time. If you want to pursue that train of thought further, find a tuner, and get your car professionally tuned. Be prepared to shell out at least $500.

Sorry, should of stated that I'm new to the whole Honda scene, only ever driven fords my whole life. I was told to look into getting a chipped obd1 computer, figured I'd list what I had done to the car so it would help, maybe by chipped they meant tuned? Idk. Sorry for being new to Hondas or not knowing exactly how to word everything, took me a while to know I had a d16y8 lol.

It's all good, we all start somewhere. "Chipping" is one tuning option. There are others, but they all would require an OBD2A to OBD1 conversion harness, and an OBD1 ECU. Find a local tuner before you buy anything, and ask them what you should get. Different tuners prefer different hardware/software, and if you just go blindly buying stuff, you might end up wasting money, or pissing off the person you're trusting with the health of your motor.

The real question is how much power are you trying to gain with JUST the chipped ecu an no FI? You said you need power off the line but you just have the basic engine setup with a chipped ecu. My opinion, acceleration doesn't win raises.....its choosing the proper transmission gearing to match the engine output, decent tire and a suspension configured to your liking. YOUR LIKING. I said that in upper case so you understand not everyone autoX with the same setup as the opponent. But than again this is just an oval track you go round and round in.

I was about to say, change up the gear ratios.

This place can do whatever you want to do with the trans

Honda and Acura Manual transmissions

Only one gear is important on a small oval, and that's usually 2nd or 3rd. Once you get there, you stay there unless you **** up. It's all about how hard you can push from ~3k exiting the turn, to ~7k before you have to enter the next turn. Long, thin runners for the intake and exhaust manifolds, and a good tune would be a MUCH better investment of OP's money than a custom geared transmission.

Unless this oval isn't as short as OP says it is, or his ********* shrink going into corners and he slows down too much...

Car stays in 2nd gear 95% of the time, getting a p28 tuned computer, I did have a question about the engine harness tho. The car was auto, personnally changed it to manual, never changed the harness. To do a obd1 computer could I simply get a wire harness from say a 94 obd1 civic to plug right into it, or do I have to get the replacement manual wire harness for my 98, then use the step down cable? Thanks

No, you don't need to do either of those things. Just get an adapter ECU harness. You don't need to replace your wiring harness.

Guy i'm buying the computer from said That for the Computer to read everything good, is has to be a step down harness from a manual transmission to the computer, if my automatic one can step down to the obd1 computer, I shouldnt have an issue with the manuel transmission? Just want confirmation because I need to get everything before this weekend, Don't want to be SOL on Saturday needing something else and im not really sure what a chipped p28 ECU is going to look for with the harness vs a automatic one.

The plugs are all the same, you just have an extra one that you won't be using. You just need a step down harness.
