Default In neutral but still in gear????

Ok, I have a 1995 accord wagon. It has a H22 swap and 5 sped trans. Just purchased I yesterday drove around and it was fine. Today drive for about 20 minutes, stopped at a red light and when I went to take off it would not go into first (or any gear at all for that matter) when the shifter is place in what would be "neutral" it acts as if it is in 2nd or third gear and will pull forward but is bogged down. Also after having it towed to my dad's shop it will shift only into 2nd gear but no other gears. We have also manually shifted it under the hood and still the same results, will not go into in gear except 2nd and in the neutral position it acts as if in gear. Sometimes it will go into the reverse position but will only stall as if it were fighting to go forward and reverse at the same time.

Its none of those.
I had a b18a1 ls transmission fail locked in 5th gear in the same manner. Lemme guess. Engine off it shifts through like it shoukd but shifting into 2nd doesnt give the latching feedback like the other gears do when it drops into gear?

I havent ripped mine apart but I believe something to do with the selector fork or hub internally broke (as I was met with a ton of nasty grinding and marble sounds since I was moving when it happened) it still shifts but since 2 gears engage its "locked". In neutral or the locked gear the car moves fine.

It will sometimes shift freely when the car is off but most of the time it will not shift into 2nd when not running. All other gears it won't go into.

Have you verified the cables are in good condition and are adjusted properly? I dont know much about the cable linkage transmissions so you might need to look up a service manual for that

If it is internal, It sounds like its probably a broken shift fork.

It could be several hundreds to have a shop do it depending on what broke, as well as replacing any other worn out parts. Might be cheaper to replace the trans with another used unit

Make sure to first check fluid level.
