2012 Civic Passenger Airbag light turning on
Hi,
I'm new so I apologize if this question has been answered, still trying to figure out the best way to search for topics on this site :/
Anyway, I purchased my 2012 civic EX coupe on July 14th, and today I noticed the "Passenger airbag OFF" light popping on randomly as I drove to work. It would illuminate, and then turn off, then come on again.
I googled this topic and multiple answers come up, so I just want peace of mind that this is normal. I did have my purse and binder and lunch bag on my seat at the time (granted I always have my purse and other items and its never turned on). So not sure if it's just being sensitive? I know that there's safety features for if you have under 50lbs on the seat but not sure if that is true with this particular car?
Anyway help is greatly appreciated or if you could point me to a threat that addresses this exact question that would be great too!
There was another thread on this just a little while back. It ended up being the side curtain airbag sensor was loose or something.
yes it is sort of normal... from what I was told my Honda when I questioned it was that if you put like a bag or something that doesn't isn't heavy enough it will turn the air bag system off for the passenger.
very annoying at times...

Could've read the owner's manual and saved $75. If there's weight on the seat and it's under a certain amount (it says the amount in the manual), the 'passenger airbag off' light turns on to remind you the dash airbag is disabled.

Show me where I said I did or didn't have something in the seat when the light is on or off. Let me guess in the manual it says that it is normal for the VTC, rocker assembly, TPMS sensor, and my favorite latest issue of paint defects are to be expected failures for the 9th gen? Yeah OK bud. Stop being a nut rider and look at the facts.

First there was the OP:

As for your paint issue, it's not a big secret that modern cars have crappier paint than stuff from the 90s. Honda isn't the only manufacturer with issues, and it's been going on for years. Shouldn't be some kind of surprise at this point. It's a good thing new cars come with warranties, which typically take care of the issues you mentioned. Who knew the warranty was there for a reason? As for being a nut rider, I'm not the tard who bought a '12+ Si
.
Yeah, I insinuated I had stuff on the seat. Sure thing. I love people's cop out answer of "all cars have issues" or "that is what warranties are for". Keep feeding the typical BS. Glad to know you think it is perfectly OK to purchase a brand new car to have it in the shop every couple months. I pray to God that the next car you purchase has a slew of problems and you cry on here like me. I will troll you back without a doubt.

I've never bought a brand new car, and probably never will. When an issue comes up, I fix it
honda ASM here...yeap it is normal specially if you have your vinder or a hand bag that weights under 50lbs...the system detects that weight and automatically thinks there is a child seating there to turns off the air bag..same as if you clip on the seat belt the light will turn on.
Thank you! Yes very annoying! Have a feeling I'll be trading in this car in a year anyway, but good to know I don't have to fix anything.
