Default Hesitation/stall

2000 Accord SIR with H23 engine. Idles fine but sometimes wants to sort of stall when pulling off or changing gear, then revs up, slipping the clutch.

Can make driving a little jerky at low rpm and hard to rev lightly. It also has the common lull between 2000-3000 rpm where its almost lacking power.

Taken TB off cleaned it all good and had the IACV off and cleaned that too. Adjusted/checked the voltage from the TPS (0.45v closed throttle). And the throttle is closed at this voltage (held SLIGHTLY open by a quarter turn of the throttle stop screw to stop the plate sticking). I dont have an idle adjust screw on the TB.

Havent checked O2 sensor (not sure how to or what id be looking for) and dont want to just replace it if its not causing a problem.

Im not throwing any engine codes (although i am collecting ABS ones

Had a little look for vacuum leaks with carb cleaner but it dosent respond when the stuff enters the engine (also tried a hunt with a bit of butane but that didnt semt o make a difference either)

Anyone any ideas on what else to look for? Or how i can check o2 sensor? Or a better way to look for vac leaks?

thanks. Great forum by the way

Does your engine have EGR?
Check the EGR valve/ports for soot/carbon buildup.

Have you checked fuel pressure?

i took the egr off to clean it. it was previously blanked off with some sort of blanking gasket. I cleaned and refitted without the blank and no change really. Not yet seen if its made any difference to fuel consumption.

Not cleaned the ports, although its on the to do list at some point. I believe the plugs to the ports have to be drilled though. I do realise that they may be blocked and cleaning the egr wont make a difference in this case

Fuel pressure no I havent. best way to do that?

plugs look ok though not necessarily new, Cap and rotor i havent checked yet. It never misses or runs rough just feels like a tiny tap of the throttle will blip it a fair way

A misfire, or lean misfire from blocked EGR, will not necessarily cause a dramatic stumble just lack of power or 'gap' of power, weak spark=lack of power. Check all the basics first.

will give this a go when i get chance. As I said though, my EGR was blocked off by a gasket (under the original gasket). I know people do this for performance reasons, but would the ECU have to be chipped for it to not throw a code?

Just wondering if its been bypassed somehow cleaning ports wont help unless i can get it re instated into the ECU?

unless you have a chipped ecu that block off gasket is capable of causing your issues. . the ecu doesnt know its blocked off

The car was originally an auto, been swapped to a manual and I think the ECU was changed with it. Not sure if its chipped though. Any way to find out?

Open the ECU and look for an added chip, it will usually be pretty obvious.

You will need to have an ecu that is capable of being chipped first of all, so check the ecu number first and cross reference it with chippable ecu numbers.

looked at the ECU, the number is 37820-pcb-004 seems to be no visible added chip inside.

The EGR has only one harness/connector going to it, no vac lines. If i run the car and disconnect this, the engine still throws no codes (even after a short drive)

shouldnt it have noticed the EGR was not connected? and if the ports were so blocked that this dosent make a difference would it then also not throw a code for EGR flow?

cheers
